Affirmation

Affirmation is a declaration that something is true.

We all have scripts that run through our brain all day long.  These scripts are thoughts that define who we are to ourselves.  They are how we define who we are and often these scripts are unfortunately negative and self-limiting.

We develop these definitions of ourselves from repeatedly experiencing and thinking the same way over and over. We learn that we are not in charge of many aspects of our life.  We are often late, or forgetful, or in bad relationships, disorganized, not good with money, unable to handle pressure, or unable to get in shape.  It can go as far as not believing that we deserve love and to be in a good relationship.  From big to small we have these thoughts and these thoughts control how we live and approach our lives.  These thoughts define our behavior and our outlook of life.

Negative self-scripts can lead to:

Lack of self-esteem and low self-belief

Negative outlook about yourself and the world

Depression, cynicism, pessimism, self-pity, victim mentality

Inability to change circumstances

And worst of all…

Self-fulfillment prophecies cause you to act in ways that achieve negative outcomes in your life.

We did not set out to write negative self-limiting scripts, but they did get written.  Through our life experiences that we did not choose we developed these outlooks.  Although we did not choose them, we now can choose to change them.  If these scripts are the operating controls of your behavior and they are not allowing you to act in a way to realize the results you want in life and you could change them, wouldn’t you want to?

In order to change these scripts we have to get involved in how we are thinking.  We literally have to reprogram our thinking that we have developed over our lifetime.  Now this is not a quick or easy task.  It does not happen in a few days, but over time in the same manner that we can get in shape by working out our body, we can get our mind on a better and stronger path.

The first step is to recognize the self-limiting negative scripts and then work to rewrite that thinking.  You do this by catching your thoughts and asking yourself if what you are thinking is really true?  You have to say to yourself that this is simply not true and then start to repeat a positive affirmation of thinking in the opposite direction.  Here is the kicker, even if it is true, you then say, “This is true but I can change it.”

Learning how to use affirmations to rewrite your self-scripts is a powerful tool to creating not only new thoughts about yourself, but new behavior that will lead to the life you want. Affirmations and developing a positive outlook that you can create change in your life is a powerful and positive attitude to life; this is a key element to life success. Using affirmations, you can turn failure around into success and you then can create the life you want.

Start today with stating out loud to yourself:

“I am powerful to change my life!”
