Blurry Pictures
-Devlyn Steele
Imagine you are a professional photographer, not just a professional photographer, a world famous photographer. Your pictures are displayed in galleries and in all the best magazines. You capture angles, light and life in ways that make poetry out of pictures. You are truly gifted. To match your talent you have the best equipment money can buy, camera lenses and all. Your arsenal of lenses appear to be out of the latest spy movie with abilities to zoom in and capture images beyond what the naked eye can see.
Even still, with all your talent and equipment if I don't let you do one thing you will end up with nothing but blurry pictures ... focus. Without being able to focus, all your pictures will be blurry. Focus comes in two stages. The first stage of focus is finding what your target is, then once you have the object in your line of vision, then the second stage is to focus in on the picture you are trying to take.
Your life is not too much different than being that photographer. We all have talent and abilities to create amazing pictures in our life. We may have matched our talent with the best equipment, education, training and more. Yet like the photographer, if we do not focus we end up with a blurry picture of our life.
We can also end up with pictures we do not want by not choosing the object we want to focus in on. As the world famous photographer, if you did not choose what you wanted to focus in on, and yet took random pictures, or if your choice of objects where not interesting, then your pictures would not be what you wanted.
When you look at your life as a picture, are you creating the pictures you want? Is your career blurry, or is the picture clear and yet not what you want it to be. What about your body, your relationships, your fun. Yes fun times can make some of the best pictures. Is there any travel and adventure in your photo journal?
Take a picture of your body today in your mind, is it what you want to see? If not, use that telephoto zoom lens and focus in on what you cannot see today. See that picture that you want to create and focus in. Your focus will be the daily pictures you take to create that final picture. What about your career? Do you have a picture you want to create? What about the relationships you have, what pictures are you living? Don't forget the fun, take pictures of you smiling in your life.
You have the talent to be that world famous photographer if you start focusing in on the pictures you want to create in your life. It may seem at times that you can not see what to focus in on. That is why we have those special lenses that can see beyond what the naked eye can see. Go beyond what you can see and find your target and then focus in.
Your life will develop into the pictures you create. Instead of either ending up with pictures you do not like, or blurry pictures, start to focus on the pictures you want to take and develop the life you want.
what an amazing way of expressing the value of focus.
It really gave me a new look at it as a person who is not on focus.
Thanks

Great article! I'm actually an aspiring photographer so I especially love the choice of analogy :-) Just wanted to say THANK YOU so much for everything you do with Tools To Life. I'm sure your life gets crazy busy outside of this site but, I hope you know how much it truly means to me (and I'm sure a lot of other people) that you spend your time putting together this site.
I've been searching most of my life for all of the wisdom and resources you've packed into Tools and am just now, in my 30's starting to feel like maybe I can truly make what it is that I want out of my life.
I look forward to reading and hearing more!
Take care~
