Getting Back In Balance

I was standing in front of the register at the Adidas store today – buying a David Beckham soccer jersey for my niece’s birthday, when everything shook.  It’s as if I were on a boat swaying from side to side.  The rep who was helping me seemed unphased, but I was watching the room move and lights sway, and I froze in that moment.  He hadn’t even noticed, but it had literally rocked my world.

Turns out it was an earthquake.  It’s actually an expected occurrence when living in California, but also a strange thing to experience.  I felt sea-sick, nauseous, off-kilter.  In fact, I have vertigo described, and this felt similarly.

As the earth was thrown temporarily off balance, so was I.  And, the “after-shock” lasted in my body for nearly an hour.  When I arrived home, I sat down, had some water and centered myself.  I took a few deep breaths and referenced the room.  I noticed the balance in the space. The way things were arranged, the way the furniture grounded the room. I also observed what might “shake” or “fall” if there were a strong stimulus.

We can all be thrown off balance at times – sometimes by an external force or sometimes by an internal one.  Many of these off-balance triggers are hidden within your living environment.  Maybe your desk is piled with papers, the bookshelves are packed, boxes stacked overhead, a bed or sofa against or under a window, leaning mirrors, counters covered with cosmetics or appliances. Believe it, these things actually affect your nervous system and can activate your “fight or flight” response.

The good news is, your space can help keep you centered or re-balance you when you feel off-kilter.  Heavy objects anchored in corners, adequate space to move around and about, and clear surface areas all contribute to you feeling more grounded.

So, try clearing your desk, putting heavy books on the bottom of shelves, arrange your bed, sofa and desk so that your back is against a solid wall, and clear off those counters – see how you feel. I guarantee there will be a shift in the energy in the room – and in you.

how inspiring, iam clearing the clutter as we speak and i feel great. I have also created a visual board of all of my dreams and goals. it is fantastic to know, that if you believe you will recieve. Thank you

hmm interesting hypothesis.  I am glad you were safe in the earth quake.

I do have a  different sort of spae I feel balanced with in... and I am finally accepting it.  But learning that with that space is seasons.  May I explain.

I grew up where the most beautiful world to me was the woods close to my house. I would dash home and ride my horse down there and spend the day.  The majestic firs spread their branches far above us, and beneath almost every inch is covered with ferns, nettles, berries, reeds, and grasses, growing through the filtered light.  During the summer I worked to earn the money for hay and school clothes.  That  money came from picking in rows of beans whcih were as tall and taler than me strung on strings in rows as far as I could see.  I was always in environments of growth all around.  As adult,my environment included  classrooms of crayoned work hung on the walls , mobiles from the ceiling,  mats on the floor.

Clear walking areas of course, clear footpaths, clear horse trails with just a few logs to jump.  For me, my m.o. has been creating a random mess of things around me until I was at rest in the space to work.  I have learned to respect that, put useful items where I need, simplify the cleaning of it as much as possible and buy air filters.  It is restful for a passing in those expansive places, but I just keep filling them up.  I have a guest room like you describe... but I don't go in there, it just isn't comfy anymore to me. I don't need a big space... that would be overwhelming to keep up.
For now I am quite satisfied with my home.  But need to make sure the soft things are above me... in case that same earth quake rocks this house, too.
Again I am glad there was no reports of injury in the quake.  I pray those who incurred damage from it will be able to restore the buildings, and may the roads  and bridges be safe, and you stay strong.
