Holiday Focus

-Devlyn Steele

This year, many do not have the same capabilities to enjoy the holidays as they have in the past. 2009 has left many families in a financial squeeze. As Napoleon Hill puts it, "Every adversity bears the seed of equal or greater opportunity."  The adversity of 2009 is an opportunity to relearn the true meaning of the holidays.  Regardless if you are forced to learn this lesson or not, this is a lesson worth learning.

Our experiences are shaped by our focus. When we focus on what we do not have, that is the experience we have and it is also the experience that we share we those around us. If the holidays are about spreading joy and happiness, we certainly are not achieving that by focusing on what we think we should be giving or receiving in material exchange. Imagine if our focus was really to share joy and happiness, don't you think you could find ways to do that regardless of economic wealth?

Change your focus by changing your holiday goal:

The usual Holiday Goal is to give as many gifts as we can. These economic times do not allow us to give as we are used to, but we can give just as much if we change the Holiday Goal. Instead of the goal being about what we can give in presents, what if we make the goal to give as much of ourselves as we can?

A Holiday Challenge:

No matter what your economic position, I challenge you to see how much joy and happiness you can spread without buying one thing. Can you make your own cards and tell people how important they are, or do you need to buy cards that are filled with words written by someone else? How many ways can you come up with to share love and make the people you love feel special without buying one thing? I challenge you!

A Holiday Affirmation, State out Loud:

"I am the love, joy and fun I want to spread and share this holiday season."

Repeat three times, several times a day. Train your brain to accept and believe that who you are and how you spend time with the people that matter are the most important things. Believe that you are important, as you are, because you are. Imagine an unfortunate occurrence in which you were unable to spend more holidays with your loved ones. Do you think any present would compensate for your absence? Don't be absent before your time and focus on being present. There is a present in having this very present holiday. The present is "the" present. Take advantage of your life and live in the now. Be here today and connect and spread joy, love and happiness. Having time together is the most precious of all commodities.

A Holiday Choice

The quality of your holiday is not going to be determined by how much money you have. I know homes with tons of money and presents that are empty in love and joy. The quality of your holiday is going to be determined by the choices you make. If you chose to focus on spreading, sharing and experiencing love, joy, happiness and fun, you will have a great holiday season. It is all about what you choose to focus on. For your holiday, what are you going to choose to focus on and what are you going to choose to do?
