How to Think Green
By Renee Lafair Start Living Green Expert
We have to shift our emphasis from economic efficiency and materialism towards a sustainable quality of life and to healing of our society, of our people and our ecological systems. ~Janet Holmes à Court
Going green is much more than following all of the tips that are out there. It’s a thought process. When I started building green, I did not expect was that going green was going to change the way I see the world and manage my life. Yet it has become one of the variables I use in every decision.
The Way I Used to Do Things
Buying decision = function of ease, quality, convenience, price, and desire.
I based my decisions on convenience, ease, quality, and price. So, if I were buying paper, I would go to the store, look at price and quality, and make my purchase.
The New Decision Paradigm
Buying decision = function of ease, quality, convenience, desire, price
and environmental impact.
Now when I make decisions, they are generally based on all of the above, as well as the impact on the world. Sometimes my decisions are always in line with green. Sometimes they are not. However, thinking about the impact my decisions have on our world has certainly enhanced the decisions I make. Not only do I look for percentage of recycled content, I try to reduce the amount of paper at home I use by printing on two sides. Also, that same paper is recycled.
This new way of thinking is a much more interesting way to make decisions. In addition, you begin to see that your values weigh in a lot more regards how you buy.
How can you begin to change your impact? Take one item, like paper. Look at where it is in your home – magazines, newspapers, mail, printer, packaging, and more. Now, think about where it comes from, and where it is going. Do you need it all? Can you reduce any of it? Can you buy it recycled?
This is one small example of taking notice, of thinking differently, of making our world part of your decision-making filter. What you find may be enlightening and the results will be surprisingly liberating. Please share how green affects your decisions. Share examples in the comments. We can all learn from each other.
Hi
Just want to say I am enjoying your tools program and writing. Upon , friends' recommendation have just started a book titled, Animal. Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. It is not her usual type of writing but thought I'd mention it here as an eyeopener as well as a good read. I hope to see some comments about it.
Thanks and wishing you success in this program
