It's All About Laughter

-Devlyn Steele

Laughter is an instant vacation.

-Milton Berle

I feel like I just got back from a great vacation. After spending a fun evening surrounded by good friends and laughter, I find myself inspired to dedicate this inspiration to the very subject of laughter. As the Yiddish proverb states, "what soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul."  Laughing cleanses away the negativity and leaves you in a refreshed state.

We've all had those moments when we're amongst friends, as I was last night. The laughter envelops you as one listens to a story being genuinely told, and storyteller and listener alike become infected by the humor and just can't stop laughing. The physical act of laughing is so pure that one continues laughing as the stories bounce with endless energy. One doesn't know where it will start, but laughter is so infectious that it can change the mood amongst the entire group and alter reality.

As I drove home the energy stayed with me and I felt relaxed and as if I had a bit of a workout. The effect was truly amazing. In fact, when discussing last night, the feelings shared were reflecting just how much fun that was. If laughter is truly good for us and our relationships then why don't we laugh more often?

A study of laughter at Stanford University Medical School by Professor of Psychiatry William Fry, MD, showed the average kindergarten student laughs 300 times per day and adults only laugh an average of 17 times a day. Do we simply stop laughing as we grow old, or do we grow old because we stop laughing? Have we become so wrapped up in our own lives that we can no longer let go and relax?

With the fearful strain that is on me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die.

-Abraham Lincoln

The stress and demand of life and relationships should have us pursuing more laughter as a life routine. I have written and read endless articles on the positive effect of exercise, diet and attitude in our lives. In that, we have missed a critical aspect which simply comes down to laughter. We need to add laughter to our daily lives. The positive effects of laughter will surprise you and immediately improve all areas of your life.

It's hard to imagine, but laughter will create actual physical effects that benefit the body. Laughter will relax the body which relieves tension and stress and actually releases stress hormones. Your muscles will feel relaxed up to 45 minutes after laughing and that helps reduce pain. Laughter lowers blood pressure, activates the immune system, and triggers the release of endorphins (the body's natural painkillers). Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can protect you against heart attacks and also improves lung functions by emptying the lungs of air.

Do you want to communicate and connect more? You don't need to translate laughter, it is a universal language and creates positive relationships anywhere in the world. As I drove home last night, I felt rejuvenated and that is what laughter will do for you. Laughter will wake up your mind, make your body feel better, and soothe your soul. You will find yourself more creative while improving and enjoying your relationships.

Learn to share laughter in your life. Laughter is there for all of us to enjoy and it cost us nothing. You want to improve your life physically, emotionally, and spiritually? Then start laughing! The greatest thing, as with last night, laughter is contagious. So, as you laugh you will be truly improving the world as more people will catch your laughter and... laugh, and we will all be better.

I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose.

-Woody Allen

So keep on laughing and don't talk life so seriously. So instead of wishing you a great day...

I hope you have a great hardy laugh today, over and over again...
