The Big Question - Would I hire me?

If you want to get a job, ask yourself a big question. “Would I hire me?” Take a look in the mirror. That is exactly the question that your interviewer will be asking. “Would I hire this person?”
Employers take many factors into account: Credentials, experience, “fit,” and how you stack up to others, to name a few. Another influence is the first impression – your appearance! In some cases, that may include your accessories. Even a big one, like your car!
Kevin was interviewing for a position where he would wear several hats. One hat was a sales hat. Knowing he’d drive clients to lunch, it would be critical to maintain a spotless car. The company would provide the right candidate a company car. Kevin’s job during the interview was to be ready to demonstrate he could keep his own car clean!
He arrived early at the restaurant for his late afternoon interview. At this time of day, the parking lot was nearly empty, with one exception – his car. From the window, he watched his interviewers pull in. To his amazement, they parked right next to his car! Both did a visual scan, nearly pressing their noses up against the glass. Next, they gave each other the “thumbs up.”
Kevin greeted his interviewers with a big smile knowing he had passed this important test of making a great first impression. At the end of the interview, he was told he was the top candidate for the job.
It’s not hard to learn what is important to employers on appearance. They want people who will best represent them and the company. Today, that means being conservatively dressed and groomed, neat and orderly all the way around. In a tight job market, seekers need to understand one thing - now is not the time to impose your sense of style! To get hired, you need to be what the company needs you to be.
To start, review the job description. What is important in terms of hands, fingernails, clothing and shoes, hairstyle, makeup, briefcase, handbag, portfolio, planner, pen, and car? Interviewing to be an auto mechanic would not necessarily trigger the need for a manicure, while working as a sales agent may (even for the guys!).
Then, take it up a notch. Ask, “What does this company need me to be?” After taking a long hard look in the mirror, ask, “Would I hire me?” Any gaps in your answers now get added to your interview preparation to-do list.
Take a good look at yourself today. Are there things you can do to your first impression that will lead to your success? I’d enjoy hearing your interview stories. Feel free to share your victories by leaving a comment.
Brenda,
I'm cleaning my vehichle today! :)
And taking that look in the mirror.
It sounds like simple logic - but we tend to get lazy about some things - particularly when we've worked somewhere for a long time.
Do I need to get my hair trimmed? lol
Thanks for the reminder and the good info.
