Water and Weight Loss

Alisa Daglio  BodyMakeOver Expert

In an age when man has forgotten his origins and is blind even to his most essential needs for survival, water along with other resources has become the victim of his indifference.  -Rachel Carson

By now almost everyone is familiar with the link between good health and proper hydration.  Sufficient water consumption is also a key component in expediting weight loss. The average person should consume roughly two quarts of water per day (eight 8 ounce glasses).  If you are trying to lose weight you should drink another eight ounces for every 25 pounds of excess weight you carry. The Body Makeover Jump Start Tools program advocates 100 ounces of water spread throughout the day, and in order to maximize results, you must drink before you become thirsty.

Crystal Light, green tea, and homemade lemonade (made fresh using lemons and Splenda) are some diet friendly suggestions that will help provide you with variation in your daily water intake.  Be wary of flavored and fitness waters containing fructose, corn syrup, syrup, fruit juice concentrates, honey, dextrose, sucrose, sodium, and potassium benzoate.  As with anything you put inside of your body, make sure you read the labels carefully.

Once you are properly hydrated, your body is able to rid itself of stored water. You will expel what you no longer need.  The process is similar to what your body does with food.  If you go for extended hours without eating, you will send your body into "starvation mode" and your body will hold on to body fat as a means of protection. With ample water consumption you will regain the trust of your own body and it will release the excess water that it was holding onto for your personal safety.  Your body does everything that it can in order to preserve your life.  This includes bodily organs picking up the slack for one another when one organ is not functioning properly.

The metabolism of fat is a function conducted by the liver. Stored fat is converted by the liver into energy. If the liver has to pick up the slack for the kidneys (who need proper hydration in order to function correctly), fat metabolism automatically slows down within the body.  Making your liver work double time will set your body up to store fat. Keeping your body hydrated will allow your body to excrete fat in the form of both urine and sweat.

New research conducted in Germany reports, "water consumption increases the rate at which people burn calories." The Franz-Volhard Clinical Research Center in Berlin marked energy outflow among seven healthy men and women who were not overweight. The results reported in the December issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism indicate that the subjects' metabolic rates increased by 30% after drinking approximately 17 ounces of water. Within 10 minutes of water consumption the increases occurred. The findings estimate that an individual who increases water consumption by 1.5 liters a day over the course of one year will burn an extra 17,400 calories.

In addition to weight loss, proper water consumption can stave off unappealing weight loss side effects.  When weight loss occurs, certain skin types may have a tendency to sag.  Keeping the skin cells plumped up and hydrated is one way to help combat this side effect.  In addition, hydrated muscles contract more easily and make your workout more effective!  Drink up!

Hate to see a health professional suggesting  Splenda or anything with sucralose in it.  If we are talking seriously about health -- I'd skip the Splenda and all other artificial sweetners.  How about water with lemon instead of a toxic chemical?

Wow! Personally, I'd like to see some balance in the comments.  Can you consider saying, "I liked X and Y about this article" before you leap on what you didn't like as much? Writing an article ain't so easy, ya know.

For me, this article is great and really hit home. I took off 16 lbs the past 2 months and wasn't paying enough attention to my water needs. This article was perfect to get my attention.

As a writer, I really appreciate some appreciation.  So here's some comin' at ya. THANKS for this information.

As for Splenda and blah blah... I agree. I would like to see lots of drink ideas entirely natural. I donno..sun tea, limeade--I think I remember lots of other suggestions in the Body Makeover JumpStart tools program.  Water and lemon, water and lime, mineral water....what else guys?

Hi everyone, I’m just here to dispel some myths.  In order to claim to be a wellness guru you should have some knowledge of biochemistry as that is what makes our internal world go-round.  Here it is:   Splenda is essentially 3 chlorine molecules (which you find in all drinking water/shower water/etc.) bonded to a sugar molecule.  Everyone has swallowed water from the tap, bottle, pool, shower, etc.  You   Everyone knows that diabetics can use Splenda because it does not elevate their blood sugar level (I use tons of it).  The only way this is possible is if the bonds where to stay intact.  If the chlorine molecules everyone is worried about were to break off of the sugar molecule, I would see the danger in using the product.  However, as the bonds have been shown to be stable even at reasonably high heat, I would conclude that the “toxicity scare” is probably just hype from the Equal and Sweet n Low manufacturers.  Remember the milk ads that promoted drinking 3 glasses per day to help lose weight.  We all know that doesn’t work or babies would be starving to death left and right.  The same thing is happening here now.   Can anyone show me laboratory tests where Splenda has been shown to be toxic?  Laboratory test, not websites with holistic people claiming that chlorine is toxic.  Sugar is technically toxic too you know.  If you inject sugar into a muscle it immediately necroses.  Ask any EMT or paramedic who deals with diabetics.  Also, if a diabetic drinks 12 bottles of orange juice they go into a coma and die (without medical attention) if they drink 12 bottles of Splenda sweetened drinks they feel very full but go on to overstuff themselves another day.  I can tell you first hand from a friend who died on a skiing trip due to too much orange juice and from personally drinking a gallon of tea with splenda per day.  Sugar is worse on your body than Sucralose any day.   Now remember, I’m not saying that 10,000 packets per day wouldn’t be bad.  I’m sure 10,000 units of anything per day would be harmful…even bottles of water.  Reasonable doses aren’t going to do you any harm.   If there are any questions, I check in here periodically, please post.  If you have evidence to the contrary, please site your source.  Also, please don’t site experiments with mice they weight about 20 grams. (They are 1/2,900th the size of a 130 pound human).  Thank you everyone.  I hope I cleared things up here.

I like to drink tea :) lots of it! But I keep the sugar (or splenda) intake low! like just a packet per 16 oz glass. Water is very important!

There are lots of ways to loss your weight and keep your health fit. Eat when you feel a little hungry, eat slowly and stop when something complete. Eat light foods. Add weight lifting to your running, and begin slightly. Start and stick to a regular workout routine. Build your running back up to a decent level. Losing fat is really being in a calorie deficit - if you burn more calories than you eat, your body will burn fat for fuel. And there is no better way to get a calorie deficit, in your experience that a lot of cardio. Do triathlon training. Eat adequate protein. Drinking plenty of water, you can help the body remove excess uric acid. It is strongly recommended to drink at least 2 liters of water per day. mens health
