What Do You Want?
-Devlyn Steele
I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life. The problem is that I can't find anybody who can tell me what they want.
-Mark Twain
Over the years I have had the privilege of talking to thousands of people about their lives. Often those conversations lead to people telling me what they want. Regardless of age, gender, race, religion, geographic location, socio economic status, generally people want the same thing. People are looking for things to be better from their point of view. Better can come in a wide range of desires, from selfless to selfish. It runs the gambit, from people wanting more possessions to wanting to save the world. People are in search of better in so many areas such as physical, relationship, health, career, financial, fame, success, environmental, and more.
I'm sure that's what you want as well; you want some part of your life or the world to be better from your definition of better. Not only do most people want that, they search for how to make it happen in books, lectures, movies, anywhere and everywhere. However, is the search really about how to make things better, or how to receive better?
Take a quick second and think about one thing you would like better in your life. Focus on just that one. Now without buying a book, going to a course, googleing it or other, ask yourself this, "What is one thing I can do to make that happen?" Amazing, you know how you can start working towards making what you say you want better in your life right now.
The reality is that you know things you can do to start working towards the things you want right now. So the question is, "Do we really want the things we say we do?" Well of course we do, we just want to have them delivered to us FedEx overnight, and for the most part we don't want to do the work. What we're really looking for in these books and courses is a short cut, a magic answer, a secret that once discovered will make it all easy. "If I think positive and see it happening it will."
I can assure you as much as you want to see yourself in shape and think positive about it, unless you eat right and exercise it will not happen. You can buy book after book and go to class after class, but life really is not so complicated, you get results from the effort you put in your life. That is what Mark Twain meant by when he said, "I can teach anyone how to get what they want out of life, but I can't find anyone who knows what they want." What he found is that people simply do not focus on doing the work. If you are willing to do the work you can create change. There is an amazing truth about the human spirit, and that is when we really want something we have endless energy to make it happen.
Today, take the time to think about just one thing you really want. Then think about one thing you can do to start working towards that want. Then start! Be willing to put the effort in and get started today. You will feel better about yourself than you have felt in a long time, and you will be on the way to not just thinking about change, you will be creating change.
Excellent article. It was like you describe me! Thanks for opening my eyes.
"What do I want?" is the key question for clients to ask in my mediation process: beginning, middle and end all revolve around that question. How do you know what to accept in an agreement if you don't know what you want? My marital negotiation process (see www.mediate.com/fiske and check the "useful documents" page) begins with each spouse having focussed conversations with himself or herself. When I tell couples you have to figure out what you want and tell the other, some start laughing: "We've been married 23 years and I've never known what (s)he wanted." It's the hardest question for many people, particularly women who tell me "I've been trained to look out for everyone else. I've never asked myself what I want." Another way in which mediation can change people's lives: their relationship to self. Thanks for writing about this elemental question. Finding the answer to this question is more valuable than that of installment loan.
THIS IS and has been the disasterous and haunting question right here! What do I want?
