What is Your Job Spiel?

Brenda Griffin  Get A Job Expert

To desire is to obtain; to aspire is to achieve.  ~ James Allen

Imagine being on an elevator.  The doors close. You have only those few moments between floors to answer the question, “What are you looking for in a job?”  Would you know what to say?  Better yet, would you be able to express it clearly and confidently? Would your answer be intriguing, leaving them wanting to know after the doors close?

If you answered yes, then you know your job spiel.  If you are not sure, then it’s time to create one!

“What are you looking for?” is a typical interview question that can throw you off guard.  Why?  Because it’s simple! So simple, that most people do not take the time to think through the answer.  When it comes time to respond, hesitation and confusion can result, if you are not spiel-ready.

You have to make it happen.  ~ Joe Greene

Being ready and able to speak to what you want at a moments notice is empowering! First of all, it narrows your focus - so you are better able to respond to the question. This lets both you and the employer know if there is a potential match right up front.

Second, it allows you to quickly identify job opportunities as you network.  Knowing your job spiel is vital in conversations. When you know your spiel, you don’t wait to be asked. You start the conversation!  This is a great way to feel empowered with your search.

Knowing what you want and what you are looking for in a job is one of your most powerful search tools.  This is your job spiel!  It allows you to both see opportunities and seize them.

So, how do you identify your spiel? Start by answer these questions:

What type of job are you looking for and why?

What skills do you have?

How do these skills add value to employers?

Why are you the best candidate?

Next, take those answers and write out a few sentences to create your spiel. Remember the elevator ride?  You only have about a minute! Take some time to rehearse your spiel   in front of a mirror or live audience.  For the finishing touch, add some energy and enthusiasm. Let your clarity and confidence shine through in your spiel!

Hi, I just wanted to share my views on this subject. I understand what you are telling us, but sometimes it's hard to change from our old self, to change our way of thinking. I feel that all of us would like to be better people, to do the things we should be doing, to make the right choices, to lead better lives. It is easy to understand why we need to change, it's just after years of doing the wrong thing, making wrong decisions and so forth is difficult to get on the right track. Hopefully, we will get it right before it's too late.

Thanks for all the good advise and showing us the way.

Hi Bud,

Thanks for taking the time to write a comment. I appreciate your candor on the change process.  I agree, it is one thing to see why we need to change and another to actually change. That is why Tools to Life is here - to support each other with the changes we want to make.  We are happy to support the members with thier goals.

I am a true believer that it is never too late to make a change that is important you. Each day is an opportunity we all have to make a change, even a small one, and work towards our goals.  It is great to celebrate these victories and feel powerful in doing so!

I am glad you are here and on Day 6!  You have so much to look forward to as you progress through the program. Again, I appreciate your contribution through reaching out and leaving a comment.  You never know how many other people feel the same way until you share.  It is in this sharing that the community is built and strengthened.

I also wanted to let you know that I grew up in Corning.  It is nice to see the Southern Tier represented in the tools membership!

Warmly,

Brenda

Hi Brenda,

Please advise.

Spiel: We offer MasterCAM CNC programming skills for the woodworking industry.  Our current project is to provide CAD drawings and CNC code for a 5-axis woodworking application.  I am working with a senior machinist that complements my MasterCAM and R&D background.  We supply a number of services to meet your needs.

This is my first draft.  ANY advice appreciated.

BIO:

I have recently completed MasterCAM and other CNC machinist Certificate upgrades from an R&D Technician career and hope to build a part-time, initally, contract CAD and technical writing software development business with a partner who is also upgrading his AutoCAD-MasterCAM training for the 5-axis CNC machining job.

For me this, requires a lot of fast-learn hours added to a full-time Industrial Security future, after coming in from the very cold automotive manufacturing world.  I need to find an employer of contract CAD Technicians (entry level) or someone to market our skills.  In the 5-axis case, we are connected to the client from previous work and would very much like to continue work for this client.  I bring a 20 year R&D background, more from flaw detection, automated electro-mechanical inspection systems background, that is similar to CNC programming of machine shop systems, regardless of whether cutting metal, wood, or plastic.  My partner has a strong reputation for innovative CNC woodworking, relevant to custom stairs and railing designs for home and architectural clients.

Hello Tech4,

Awesome start! It looks like you and your partner are really putting in some great effort here.  It is great to start flushing out your qualifications and what you have to offer. After all, how do you know what you really have to offer unless you take the time to write it down!

What I would recommend, for your next draft, is a shift in focus -  to how what you do helps / benefits others.

At then end of the day, that is what people really want to know "what are the benefits to me / my organization".  So with that in mind, what I'll pass on to you is a general guideline to take both your spiel and bio to the next level:

I/we help people             , so they can            .

Ask yourself a few questions -

What problems will you help solve for employers and clients?

What are their needs?

What goals do you help them with?

How does what you do benefit them?

Consider getting specific on how your services meet the needs of your prospects. How can you summarize that in one crisp sentence for a spiel?

I guide participants through this very process in the up coming "Get A Job" program.  After documenting accomplishments, I will show you how to focus on what others need rather than what you (the job searcher) needs. This will give you the edge - both in building a business and job searching!

Keep up the effort and keep us posted! I look forward to watching you shine!

Have a great day,

Brenda

Spiel:  We can provide complete 5-axis CNC experience that will expedite product delivery and enable more complex woodworking designs.

BIO:

My MasterCAM experience is backed up by my partner's strong reputation for woodwork tooling innovations.  We are currently working on two 5-axis CNC applications.

Comment:

My MasterCAM skills need upgrading ASAP, prior to a 2 week proposal phase, starting in 3 weeks for the new client.  Current applications do not require complete CNC programming from sketch to final product delivery, instead of current optimizing of existing CNC code.

The new client is starting with a new 5-axis CNC machine so that it can produce more volume at less cost for a product previously made with outdated drawings and 3-axis machine.  This is a huge investment that depends on new 5-axis programming that reliably increases production and more complex designs for higher price markets.

This spiel is used on phone, on website, and marketing brochure that will witness these success stories as quality and delivey references.

ANY advice appreciated

GT

I like it! Good action word with expedite.

Some ideas for you to consider on the spiel:

We provide....that expedites.  See the difference?  Moving from what you "can do" to what you "do"....(sounds like you are given your other two projects)

Is there any data to quantify the expedite?.. for example..."in half the normal time"...or quantify with known cost savings?  If so, I would add it in....it you don't have that yet, add it when you can. Oo is it "known" in your industry why this is an advantage? That would work as well.

As for the bio - more than one sentence is fine to tell your story...I like the less approach overall.  Word recommendations for you to consider.....subsitute "backed" with complimented or supplemented.....Because between you, you offer a solid package to support this project....correct?

I would have you consider not including "two" and simply say you are working on "other" 5-axis applicatoions...because when you get this project, it will be three!  Unless you are specifically identifying these projects in your quals package elsewhere. Once you complete those, you will have new ways of presenting that experience.

Sounds very exciting GT. Keep us posted on how your proposal goes!

Take care,

Brenda
