Where the Jobs are and How to Get One 2009

Brenda Griffin  Get a Job Expert

Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning.  ~ Winston Churchill

Healthcare. Engineering. Programming. Federal Government. Energy. These are just a few job categories experiencing an upward swing, according to SimplyHired. If your industry is on the decline, consider transition to a field of growth.  Get the income flowing again.

Start Now.  If you are newly laid off or at risk of losing your job, resist the temptation to sit back and wait.  With continued unemployment projections well into 2009, it is critical to get in game now. It is an employers market. You need to position yourself fast!

Expand your job possibilities.  Take time to consider all your experience, qualifications and credentials.  Make a list of all the jobs for which you currently qualify. Next, flush out the specific skills you have that apply to other jobs and industries. Add these to your search list to broaden your prospects. Be creative!

Use a functional resume. This style of resume is ideal for career changers.  It emphasizes skills and experience rather than work history.  It is effective when you have limited experience in your broadened target areas. Write out one resume for each type of position you target!

Get the most from Career Fairs.  Show up early dressed to impress with a game plan.  Research participating companies in advance.  Bring copies of your resumes.  Wear a smile.  Have your job spiel ready.  Make contacts. Enjoy the process.  Follow-up!

Keep an eye on the business news.  The incoming Mr. Obama administration makes regular announcements on economic stimulus packages.  Current discussions include upgrading the Nation’s infrastructure.  This includes improvements to roads, bridges, and ports that would create engineering and construction opportunities.  Also mentioned has been the greening of Federal buildings also likely to present opportunities. Stay vigilant!

Think long term.  Whether laid off, working part time or concerned you may lose your job, stay patient with the process.  Where you are today will not be where you are a year from now.  Set your goals and continue to work towards them.  Do all that you can to position yourself for success as you work with forces outside your control.  Be determined to succeed!

Use affirmations to stay focused. Here are a few: I am willing to put in the effort because I am worth it.  My skills are valuable to employers. The actions I take lead to success. I am fully prepared to go on interviews. Recite these daily!

Remember, job hunting is a treasure hunt!  Be on the look out for clues.

If we do what is necessary, all the odds are in our favor.  ~ Henry Kissinger
