Chronic Pain sufferers get moving

Goal per member: 0 days

exercise.

As a chronic pain sufferer, I know just how difficult it is to be active due to fatigue.  Perhaps you experience the same problem for lack of sleep or high pain levels as I do.  Every day is a challenge . New information was given to me by my pain specialist of 3 years that a recent study has proven that there is a certain chemical released in the body when we experience pain, especially found in the neck and shoulder muscles that can be metabolized and released from the body through exercise.  As explained to me, if we do something simple like a low paced walk 3 times a week, it will help get the toxins out of the body and provide natural pain relief.  The key is not how fast we walk but the distance we walk.  Along with getting moving, he encouraged me to be sure to get my daily water intake in to help move the toxins from the bloodstream to be filtered through the kidneys and out of the body.

I have done as my doctor suggested and I have to tell you that it has made a noticeable change in my life.  I am less depressed, the pain level did go down half in percentage, and I felt more energy.  It is just amazing and makes it easier to motivate myself to continue because the pay off is so rewarding.

First I started in my neighborhood and walked to the point that I could comfortably return home.  I did this three days.  The following week, I added a little more distance by about a third of what I had previously walked and continued this process each week. My goal is to be able to increase my walking to every day.  Rainy days are not a problem although pain levels increase.  I follow the forecast closely and plan where I will walk and how to medicate for the day to reduce my pain levels.  Weather that used to keep me inside now offers me an option of getting my walk on in a grocery story.   It’s true!  This is totally acceptable because the goal is to get moving.  If I am in a grocery store, I start on the outside isles and make a complete circle 2 times around.  I have to admit that I put in a few items in my cart so shoppers don’t think I have lost my mind. Lol  Then I walk up and down each and every isle adding items in my cart that are on my grocery list.

So lets do this together!  Let’s get moving and get some control over the pain and refuse to let it dictate the day.  Remember, building distance is key not how fast you can complete your route.  Keep in mind your pay off. Don’t give into the pain rather find the strength to do this for yourself.  Move and manage your pain on another level!  We are going to do this together.  You are not alone.

The challenge is as follows;  Most of us have to rate our pain on a scale 1 to 10 at the doctor’s office.  One being no problem and ten being, “I need to go to the ER, this is unbearable.”  Journal how you feel before you walk and after you return.  Rate your pain level each time you journal.

Week 1:  Pick three days that you will dedicate the time to walk a short distance each day

Walk some place that brings a pleasurable slow paced walk rather alone or with your family or perhaps a friend.

Week. 2:  Increase your distance by about a third.  Don’t forget to get in the habit of keeping up with the weekly forecast.  You will not only plan where you will walk, you will plan how you will need to medicate so that you can manage your daily pain to put yourself in control not the pain!  Don’t forget to journal prior to your walk and after.

Week 3:  Increase your distance by another third.  Don’t forget to journal and rate your pain levels

Week 4:  Add another day making your walk 4 days a week.

Share your experiences and suggestions with us.  What are your triumphs or your struggles? We want to hear from you.

By your side,

Alexnikki

alexnikkialexnikkiGot it done again

I didn't sleep well but I still got up at my normal time.

I had an 8.  I drank a little milk then fixed a bottle of water to take with me on a walk with the boys.

We walked for 5 minutes when I realized that my cat was following us.  So we turned around and got him inside where he could be safe.

We got back on our route and walked another 20 minutes.  So we got in the 30.  It was so hot and yucky at 8:30 this morning, we took a different route than normal so that we could walk in the shade.

When I got back, my levels went down to a 6.

alexnikkialexnikkiFinally got moving today

I walked the boys this morning and started with an 8  down to a 7 right now.  I also went shopping for a few hours.  It's just that when I sit down, I feel the pain coming back unless I can get my massages in.

Next week is another week to try.  I'll get the therapy with massage in and won't have the stress of legal matters over my head.

I hope to get up and go walking before the humid, hot weather gets started tomorrow.

Today was horrible and tomorrow is supposed to be 102 degrees with high humidity.  Got to get going early if I can.

alexnikkialexnikkiThanks
Thanks for sharing your story.  I hope that your health can improve in some way.
kaykaykaykaymy story
i was boen with a muscle disease so i have the strength of like a 7 year old. my muscle will get very sore and at times they can give up out of no where. so it can get scary. some days its way too hard to even move if i do to much the day before, then i developed scoliosis after a car accident. since then i was 5 foot now im back down to 4 foot 7. but its funny cause when i am able to i can stretch my back out in just a certain way and i can gain another inch..lol.. of course it gets very painfull especially since i cant use my legs to lift anything up i have to use my back cause if i use my legs to pick anything up, i cant get back up.. a lot of doctors dont know what i have nor the prognosis untill recently i have learned only a few things, and ive been lied about it from my mom. she never gave me any info.. she said i got it from my dad but he dont have it. and on statements it says i got it from my dads side because there some challenged ppl on his side wich also isnt true.. so i think its from her drinking and doind drugs with me. but in my progmnosis its says hip dislocation and early life span.  and lately ive been having problems with my hips soo i get scared once and a while but im staying strong when i can be.. well i hope that your pain goes down, and i know headaches suck.. well i wish the best of luckk to you i will ttyl. thanks for asking love nikki PEACE!!
alexnikkialexnikkiMy injury

My injuries are from a car accident.  My entire upper body experiences pain.  Headaches from day one with no relief, neck, shoulder, upper back, and arms are in constant pain.  ANd like you, some days are worse than others.

What's your story?

kaykaykaykayhope things get better

alexnikkialexnikkiPlans for tomorrow

I will go on a walk with my two Bichon baby boys.  If I feel up to it, we'll take a 20 minute ride into town and go to PetsMart and walk around and let them shop for a new toy or two.  We'll get some more food and just walk, walk, and (you guessed it, kaykay), walk.  lol

With all of the sitting today and the stress of the lawyers office (10 and a half hours) I am experiencing a level 9 with meds.

I HAVE to get moving tomorrow.  Nudge me my new, sweet friend.  I need ya.  Frown

alexnikkialexnikkiYeh, Kaykay!!

I did have fun at the birthday party.  Cameron, my grandson, had chocolate cake and chocolate icing all over his little face, fingers, and clothes.

I am so very proud of your efforts and your results.  Yeh!!  Woo hoo!!

alexnikkialexnikkiHome now

I made my trip home today.  I'm very tired but it was a wonderful visit.  Needless to say, I didn't get any walking done today.

Saturday was my grandson's birthday party so after the small wedding Friday and the party Saturday, I was pooped on Sunday!! lol

Sunday afternoon, my daughter brought over my cuddlebug so I chased him.  Being he's only one, it didn't take too much energy.  He could go only so fast.

Today, I woke up with a 7 and it's about a 6 righat now.

Tomorrow, I'll get a walk done.

alexnikkialexnikkiWedding day

The wedding was beautiful and sweet.  I did some more running around, helped set up a couple of things for the reception, had my massage, came home and rested for a couple of hours.  So my moving around was lots and lots of walking!!

Woke up with a 7 and I have a 5 right now which is so very rare.  Thank the Lord.

alexnikkialexnikkiLast minute shopping

Today, I woke up with an 8 and feel a low 6.

I took the boys for a short walk up and down the hills again for about 15 minutes.

I took my daughter out to eat and finished some last minute shopping for the wedding tomorrow evening.

We will have 12 people there...I tell you the list keeps growing.  We just wanted to keep it private but that's where we are.. no sense in complaining about this one either, kaykay.  I'm right there with ya.

They say the weather is suppose  to be rainy .  So I will be proactive and ride with my parents to the church and take my meds and will have extra with me.

Talk to you later.

Take care.

kaykaykaykaytoday gloomy

alexnikkialexnikkiChanged things up

Forgot to add this note.

The change I made in my walk today was walking up and down the hills on my father's land.  I made criss crosses across my grandmother's yard too.  She probably thought I'd lost my mind but that's ok.  I got a good sweat which I usually don't so that helped today, I believe.

alexnikkialexnikkilittle voice inside

I walked my little Bichons this morning although I felt a little poorly.  We have had an over cast today.  I almost gave in to just not doing anything, but I listened to that little small voice inside and decided to get moving!

We walked for 20 minutes.

I woke up with an 8 and went down to a 6 after the walk.

alexnikkialexnikkiSo excited for you, Kaykay

I can not express enough just how excited I am for you that your pain levels are going down.  If I could hug you right now I would!

Congrats on the good work!

lots of love,

alexnikkiLaughing
