WordbirdWordbirdOIympics!
Hey..got caught up in the Olympics so I'm up too late and get too sleep too late for pre-dawn wake up. But I enjoyed this challenge and benefited from all early rises. Thanks!
FAT DOGFAT DOG1 day to go....

I am using the extra time to de-clutter my life, and I can vouch that I am much better off having done this challenge, Thanks fir setting it up Sentient. Enjoy the last day!

FAT DOGFAT DOGI need to stay on track - so I'll sign up again!
Nearly finished. I've appreciated the extra time in my life as a consequence of getting up earlier - I will search for the next challenge and re-sign. As for my consistency, well I'm human!
SentientSentientNew challenge!

Almost at the end!

I'm going to start another challenge today with a "3 days to join" option.  It's going to be to choose your own wakeup time and just record it for yourself publicly.

So you just record what time you actually wake up, 6 for 6 am, 8 for am, 6.5 for 630 am, etc.

I hope you guys all join for round two :)

SentientSentientNearing the end!

Ouch Fatdog! The night sounds like a lot of fun, but the morning less so!

When I think about these challenges I do them for a bunch ofdifferent reasons.  One is that I want to show myself what I'm capable of.  Two is that if I instill a habit it could be very useful to me!  Thirdly, it's great to be able to live life from a different perspective so you can try out something and get firsthand experience with it.

At this point, I know that a 6 AM wakeup is perhaps not for me.  On the one hand, I love having lots of time in the morning to spend with my girlfriend before she leaves for work (I work from home).  On the other hand, it just makes more sense for me to go to bed later since I have work that needs to be done late at night.  I'm torn between these two, but I think a 7 AM wakeup that allows me a 12 am bedtime is probably smarter.

Reason #1 of just showing myself "Hey you can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it" is the reason I'm here right now :)

That, and of course I love doing the challenge with the rest of you guys!

So, don't be crazy about the 6 AM wakeups unless it makes sense for you.  The reasons will have to be your own and of course, you have to  be honest with yourself.  haha, I know at 5:30 am I've been tempted to say "uhh, it'l be better if I sleep in" but I know that my early morning reasons are more like excuses.

FAT DOGFAT DOGgetting to bed early is the problem
Up till 2 am this morning watching the olympics opening ceremony, and heading out to a band tonight. I think i will have an afternoon nap, cause I'm going to need match sticks to hold my eyes open at 6 tomorrow!!
SentientSentientWelcome back!

It doesn't matter how many days you miss or what the reason is..it's nice to see you back FatDog!

I missed on  yesterday too because I made the decision to do so.  Fortunately it didn't make getting up today at 6 any harder.  That morning routine really helps.  It's been the key for me.  By the time I am throwing cold water in my face and smiling in the mirror I am wide awake no matter how drowsy I felt a few minutes ago.

I think after this challenge is over I'll probably push my wakeup time back a little.  I have work that I need to do in the evening and the 10ish bedtime makes that a little harder than it should be.  I'm still going to commit to 6 AM for the rest of our 30 days though!

Look for another challenge to start as soon as this one is over.  I was thinking that we'd just pick the time we want and use this as a public record rather than a scorecard.  So if I want 7 AM, I just record 7.  If I wake up at 8, record 8.  I'm hoping that may encourage even more people to join next time around.

FAT DOGFAT DOGI changed my priorities - but am back on track

I did not get up at 6 for quite a few days over the last week....and I'm not going to bore you with my excuse...even if it is great. All I can say is thanks for the nudge Sentient, I am back on track - I've actually missed not being up at 6 am, and I am looking forward to being back up at 6 am tomorrow.Laughing

SentientSentientThe bump!

It's funny how in tools, Coach talks about the "big bump" that you hit in the 20th-30th day in the program.  I can feel the  bump in this challenge too!  It was definitely much easier to pull off earlier on.  Enthusiasm and excitement was doing a lot of the heavy lifting.  Lately the past few days I've wanted to sleep in, even though I'm getting to bed on time.

The reason I've been able to make it is that I have a really short morning routine (the tools one).  It only takes 5 minutes to do, but by the end of it, I'm just no longer tired anymore.  Splashing a little water in your face, brushing your teeth, and making goofy faces in the mirror until you laugh seems to be doing the trick.

This is also my first challenge, and I have to say it helps more than I thought to  be doing this with others :)

SentientSentientStill going!

Whoa,

I'd been lax at updating how things are going!  Fortunately, everything is going really well!  I'm tired some days when I get up, but I always feel better by the end of my morning routine.

It's peaceful and beautiful in the morning!

Wishing you all the best!

SentientSentientHaving a great day!

Welcome Tovenkatr!  I hope you keep up with us, and post some comments to let us know how you are doing!

Enjoy the almond nuts, Fatdog.  See how you feel on them.  Some people have a lot of trouble with fats and feel drowsy on them.  I and a few others I know do really well on them.  Let me know how it goes!

Guinness is a great drink.  In university I spent what little money I had building a kegerator and outfitting it with a nitrogen canister and the special tap to dispense Guinness whenever I wanted it!  Even though I mostly stopped drinking a little while ago (originally gave it up for polyphasic sleep actually), Guinness will always have a soft spot in my heart.

FAT DOGFAT DOGHalf way home

We are half way there - unblievable - this challange is going really fast. Thanks for the diet tip Sentient - I will try to explore what works best for me - but have started munching on almond nuts for now!! - mind you, I think my consumption of guinness during the evening didn't help yesterday :)

tovenkatrtovenkatrI am thinking of doing this a bit early.

For now I am having a up time of 6.20 and am successful. After few days will make it bit earlier.

Cheers to all you guys who are make it early.

SentientSentientDiet and Sleep

Hey Fatdog,

Thank you for the well wishes.

Play around with your diet a little bit and see if your sleep requirements don't change.  I've altered my diet a LOT in the last year.  I've gone from eating meat, to being a vegetarian, to a vegan, to eating mostly fruit (that was a little crazy).  Within those I've swung from eating a lot of calories from carbs to a lot from fat (and when I am weight training a lot from protein).

My body definitely responds to each diet differently (and it requires an adjustment period too).  Right now I get a reasonably high % of my energy from fat (avocados and nuts) and I probably feel better than I did on any of those other variants.  I think that makes me a bit of an outlier, but it just goes to show it can help to experiment (don't listen to other's wisdom and find your own!).

Also, no matter what is in your diet, eating consistently throughout the day **really really** helps with the energy levels.  It helps even out the insulin levels and takes stress off your body.  The general rule seems to be that any energy you don't use on digestion is free for you to use elsewhere!

I love cheating sleep (I actually tried polyphasic sleep for 2 months), but I also *hate* to go without it.  These have been some of the things that worked best for me to naturally reduce the amount of rest my body desires and needs to function well!

FAT DOGFAT DOGWell done Sentient

Have a great day!!

I'm finding mornings ok - wilting in the evening! - trying to get to bed by 10:30 'ish' (it the 'ish' bit I'm having a problem with)

SentientSentientMade it on the weekend!

I pretty much expected to not get up at 6 am this weekend.  I figured it wouldn't make sense so I would go back to it on Monday.  Of course, I left my alarm set for 6 AM just in case I had a change of heart.

Well, both days I've gotten up at 6 and thanks to the morning checklist, which I've been pretty good at following, this has been eerily easy!  I'm not tired at all, and doing the checklist makes me feel great.

To top it off, a little story about "having a great day."  I need glasses and I'm blind as a bat without them. My cell phone alarm goes off this morning on my desk across the room.  I spring out of bed to go turn it off and in the darkness/blindness my hand travels the straight line towards the phone, without realizing the massive jug of water standing in the way.  Well, it wasn't standing in the way for long since I dumped the contents everywhere.

After a few minutes of cleaning up though, "I'm having a great day" and on to the rest of my routine.  Ironically, despite EVERYTHING getting soaked, I was probably even happier than normal because I got to pat myself on the back for handling it so well!  Human beings are funny aren't we?

FAT DOGFAT DOGOne third of the way home
Even though I am sometimes tired in the evening - I am finding getting up in the morning at 6 am fine...maybe it is already habit!!
SentientSentientGoing well

Woke up again today at 6 without my alarm.

I feel pretty good too!  I don't have the same type of grogginess that I did a week or so ago when I tried this.  Whatever tiredness I do have goes away pretty quickly.

Congrats to both of you FatDog and Wordbird!

FAT DOGFAT DOGI need some sleeeeeep
Bening on camp, and only had 10 hour for the last 2 nights...so I need to get to bed real early tonight....but 4:30am - wordbird - you are amazing - well done
WordbirdWordbirdmade it
