Problem is that I am an writer, artist, so everything seems to be important, creative, etc here.

I can not focus as I have severe adhd and was dead 16 minutes during surgery. So the advise I really want is...... how do you not obcess over saving papers and articles to help others and th paper piles are totally covering my bar, my desk, etc.

Paper mess - added: Sun, Jun 08 11:12 PM

HI, I am/have gone through similar problems.  I think some of it is making a decision about what you can do in your life right now.... and maybe in the next 90 ninety days.  Maybe you are like me and are questioning if you will be able to recover enough to do at least part of the former life stuff.

For now, I would make three to seven files.  And have a garbage can, or shredder close by. One file for paper work related to this year's life taxes, one for bills such as credit card, house payment utilities, and the other for creative ideas.  If you get your file system too much, you won't be able to deal with the counter mess.

When you get your mail, throw out the obviouse junk.  Shred any offers for new credit cards.  File your bills (and mark on the calendar when they are due... you may already have a good way to handle them.)

If you think you can handle having sub categories do so, but keep it under seven.  Be sure to alphabetize and  label them.  Having different colored folders for the basic categories help.

You have to consider your health right now and getting overwhelmed is not going to help.  The important thing is to be able to handle the day to day stuff.

I don't know if you are dealing with sharing your paper work area.   But you might want to have a file for the other person's paper work stuff so it just doesn't get mixed up with yours or add to the clutter.

I don't know how long you have had these diagnosis.  But I think your brain functioning will improve.  In fact I am putting you in my prayers right now.  You don't say if you have memory problems after beign unconsciouse and I wonder if your stamina is up to handling too much of the filing.  So, keeping it simple may help.

Lastly,  Don't be afraid to ask for help.   AFter two years of not being able to do some simple filing, a friend of mine came over and went through it.  I agreed to the basic categories, and she set me up.  I went b ack to bed. I  just couldn't handle it.  I was very fortunate as she is also self-employed and understood the creative dilemma.

My life is not perfectly organized, but at least I can function.  Slowly, I have been able to do a part of my job I used to do.  Mentoring others, even in just an encouraging capacity is very rewarding.
