Hereditary or Learned?

I suppose that I have spent most of my life depressed.  My Mom was and still does get depressed, my kids get depressed.  I wonder if my kids get depressed because they learned the behavior from me or if it is hereditary or a combination of both.  Anyone share your thoughts?

Depression is within u - added: Tue, Jul 28 06:53 PM

Depression is a nasty thing to suffer from. My grandfather had it, my brother committed suicide, my oldest brother on my mothers side is depressed he felt suicidal too! It's all on my mothers side of the family, I've got depression too, but I had suffer from depression since I was 10 years old when my brother killed himself. Thanks to life coaching I've changed as a person, my marriage failed 3 and a half years ago but that did not stop me living life. Thanks to a instant life coaching book!

I think depression is learned - added: Sun, Jul 26 12:08 PM

My mother suffered from depression and my upbringing was very dysfunctional.

I suffer from depression and I can see the effects on my son already.

Their may be some hereditary factors but imagine if a child was brought up in a happy home, even though the parents used to suffer from depression?

I noticed a lot of my depressed behavior is due to bad habits and past circumstances, which means I have control and can change it.

Hope this helps a little.
