Methods of motivation to achieve your goals

There are many methods of motivation to push you to achieve your goals.  I'd like to share one of my favorites...

If, for example, you have a goal to quit smoking...you make your goal...you apply a timeline to it.  You find your why...

Then, you commit to someone else; better yet, you commit in front of many people.

Now, the next time you go to light up, it's not just you to which you have to hold your commitment...it's EVERY SINGLE one of those people to whom you've made your public commitment

The more pain you can give yourself in order to not break your commitments to yourself, the better.

Keep focusing on the pleasure you'll get by not smoking, but also remember the pain you'll get by smoking.  Your brain will do more to avoid the pain.

Keep rockin',

13 Tricks to Motivate Yourself - added: Wed, Dec 05 12:00 AM

  1. Go Back to “Why” - Focusing on a dull task doesn’t make it any more attractive. Zooming out and asking yourself why you are bothering in the first place will make it more appealing. If you can’t figure out why, then there’s a good chance you shouldn’t bother with it in the first place.
  2. Go for Five - Start working for five minutes. Often that little push will be enough to get you going.  Remember, our life is made up of our achievements, which start with the actions we take.
  3. Move Around - Get your body moving as you would if you were extremely motivated to do something. This ‘faking it’ approach to motivation may seem silly or crude, but it works.
  4. Find the Next Step - It’s impossible to work on a project. All you can do is focus on the next immediate step. Fighting an amorphous blob of work will only cause procrastination. Chunk it up so that it becomes manageable.  Writing it down helps a great deal, so that all you have to do is finish the next step, cross it off and go to the next one.
  5. Find Your Itch - What is keeping you from working. Don’t let the itch continue without isolating it and removing the problem. Are you unmotivated because your tired, afraid, bored, restless or angry. Maybe it is because you aren’t sure you have time or delegated tasks haven’t been finished yet.
  6. Deconstruct Your Fears - I’m sure you don’t have a phobia about getting stuff done. But at the same time, hidden fears or anxieties can keep you from getting real work completed. Isolate the unknowns and make yourself confident you can handle the worst case scenario.
  7. Get a Partner - Find someone who will motivate you when you’re feeling lazy. I have a friend I go to the gym with. Besides spotting weight, having a friend can help motivate you to work hard when you’d normally quit. Something that has helped me a great deal in the past is to find an accountability partner...that is, someone to hold you accountable for whatever you're trying to accomplish in your life.
  8. Kickstart Your Day - Plan out tomorrow. Get up early and place all the important things early in the morning. Building momentum early in the day can usually carry you forward far later.
  9. Read Books - Not just self-help or motivational books, but any book that has new ideas. New ideas get your mental gears turning and can build motivation. Learning new ideas puts your brain in motion, so it requires less time to speed up to your tasks.
  10. Get the Right Tools - Your environment can have a profound effect on your enthusiasm. Computers that are too slow, inefficient applications or a vehicle that breaks down constantly can kill your motivation. Building motivation is almost as important as avoiding the traps that can stop it.
  11. There are No Small Problems - The worst killer of motivation is facing a seemingly small problem that creates endless frustration. Reframe little problems that must be fixed as bigger ones, or they will kill any drive you have.
  12. Develop a Mantra - Find a few statements that focus your mind and motivate you. It doesn’t matter whether they are pulled from a tacky motivational poster, or just a few words to tell you what to do. If you aren’t sure where to start, a good personal mantra is, “Do it now!”
  13. Build on Success - Success creates success. When you’ve just won, it is easy to feel motivated about almost anything. Emotions tend not to be situation specific, so a small win, whether it is a compliment from a colleague or finishing two thirds of your tasks before noon can turn you into a juggernaut. There are many ways you can place small successes earlier on to spur motivation later. Structuring your to-do lists, placing straightforward tasks such as exercising early in the day or giving yourself an affirmation can do the trick.

Motivation to achieve whatever goal you set for yourself...no matter what. - added: Thu, Nov 29 12:00 AM

It's what keeps people working all hours, up early, late to bed. Your purpose...your desire.  The desire dominates conversation, thinking, actions.

Take a moment to think about the goal you've set for yourself.

  • How committed are you to achieving this goal?

  • Under what conditions would you give up?

  • What if you wanted your goal so badly that you knew with absolute certainty that you would absolutely, positively never ever give up?

Find the reason that you want this goal.  Find your why.  Find your purpose.  It will be the thing that drives the motor behind your actions to achieve your goals.

Here's what to do if you find yourself overwhelmed with your list of goals... - added: Thu, Nov 29 12:00 AM

I've talked to some people recently about setting goals...helped them through the process.  I found that a few of them became overwhelmed with the massive amount of change it induced into their life.  After determining that was the case, I asked them to pick one of their goals...the one that, if achieved, would produce the most and best change in the quality of their life.  After they picked their one goal, I had them focus on that goal for thirty days.  At the end of thirty days, I had them incorporate a second goal into their routine.

This served two purposes.  The first, and most important, in my view, was it took them out of overwhelm and got them into action immediately.  Second, it created a situation where they were able to focus and concentrate on a single goal or outcome.  This concentration of power and focus on the goal accelerated the process for these individuals.

So, if you find yourself in overwhelm with your list of goals, it's ok.  Pick just one.  Work on it for thirty days.  You will find it takes you out of overwhelm.  Another "secret" advantage that you'll find is you'll actually accomplish your goals quicker than you previously would've thought.  This is the concentration of focus coming in to play.  If you focus on one thing and don't multi task, that thing will improve, no matter what.

Blame - added: Sat, Nov 24 12:00 AM

Remember, there's only one person enabling or preventing us from achieving what we want in our life...us.

We can't blame anyone outside ourselves.  We can play it in our mind however we want, but when it comes down to it, if getting our goal were a must in our life (and not a should), we would get that goal.

If you're stagnating on your goals, recommit right now.  Right now is a fresh new moment.  Take advantage of it.

Question to ask yourself during the day - added: Wed, Nov 21 12:00 AM

Throughout my day, the question that has kept me most on track to re-commit and re-focus to my goals and dreams is:

What is the best use of my time right now for my long-term success?

I have that written on my wall in my office and my bathroom.  It reminds me when I get distracted (which I do very easily) about what I'm actually doing.  It reminds me to be and live consciously.

If you find yourself stagnating on your goals today, recommit.  NOW is the time to do it.  Don't put if off.  Ask yourself if the activity you're doing right now is the most valuable use of your time for your long-term success.
