Canadians: tell me what you know about Nelson, BC

There seems to be a lot of Canadians on here so I figure I'll ask about something that has been on my mind more or less for the past two years.

I've never been there but something about this little mountain town has intrigued me.  I first heard of it because the area near Roger's Pass it is known as a mecca of backcountry skiing and snowboarding, heli and snowmobiling.  But then I read more about the town itself:  small town, 'bohemian' style community, lots of recreation and summer tourism.  Kind of like a Canadian version of Aspen (with less pretension).  Am I close? 

My girlfriend and I dig mountain biking so I was thinking of tripping up there this summer to check it out.  Are there good trails there?
