I've been pondering health and fitness today. I read an article elsewhere about changing your habits, especially ones that aren't that great for you.
What this article espouses, that if you're going to try to change something, rather than scare the hell out of yourself by committing to do something completely grandiose such as running a 5 mile marathon before dawn each day (okay bit of an extreme example, but stay with me on this, there is a point to this) which you're probably not going to keep up, commit to smaller goals, just for a month, then if you like them and benefit from them, you just continue with them.
Which got me thinking regards to my own health. I've never smoked or done hard drugs of any kind. I drink far too tea, but am trying to cut that down and replace it with water. I've found that the answer to this is when I'm out, keep a little bottle with me and at home, I just keep a 2 litre bottle in reach and slug from it when I'm thirsty. It's surprising how much you can slurp in this way.
As regards booze, I'm the not world's biggest drinker anyway. I've seen first hand how alcoholism combined with smoking killed both my parents and I've no desire to go there, thank you very much. That's best left for a weekend. And I never have anymore than those dinky little bottles of wine you can get from Asda's or Tesco's. You get about 2 glasses and that's perfect. I'd rather go for quality than quantity, anyway and savour the experience.
I am overweight. I'm 5ft 9 in and wieght almost 15 stone. I don't look it, because I'm tall, but I've decided to try vegetarian for a month. If I can combine that with walking my dog more and start running...(I want to run a short marathon next year, for charity) but find a guide to running and do it sensibly, I'm hoping I may tone up.
I guess what I'm trying to say here is, I'm looking to adopt a healthier regime as a way of life. I don't want to go on a diet per se (though they work for some, I appreciate that) but I know me and I'm more likely to stick with something as a way of life, a habit if you like.
I have a curvy, hourglass figure, with boobs and a bum. You know what? I'm actually happy with that. But I'd like to lose my tummy and look fitter and more toned. I'm not skinny and never will be. And that's fine. It takes all sort to make a world don't it? I'd also like more energy and get up and go. It's about doing this for me; no-one else and perhaps that's the best reason of all.
So I'm going to introducing these changes slowly. Today I'm gonna investigate vegetarian eating (I love fruit and veg so that's a good thing right?). I've already done day 1 of Dr. Carlos's programe and will look put sprouted grains.
Then I'm gonna look at running. But in the here and now I can take Kev (dog not boyfriend) before you ask for a longer walk today...
