Bacically if it is white (flour, pasta, milk, ice cream, poataoes, etc.) it is a very simple carbohydrate. Which means it will go to your bloodstream very quickly and leave it just as quickly - it will not sustain your energy levels.
When we eat simple carbohydrates they convert into sugar and enter our bloodstream. The pancreas produces insulin to remove such high levels of sugar from our blood and stores it safely away as fat. This is the main reason why carbohydrates are discouraged from diets.
Also you can do a search on GI - Glycaemic Index - this will show you what foods are simple carbohydrates and which are more complex. The lower the GI the more complex and therefore healthier they are for you. Hope this has helped.
