OS Meltdown

Do you like irony?

I am a software developer, working for a very small company.

We are currently without a technician, and just discovered that backups are not happening on every machine. So, I got tasked with setting up a backup routine for the linux machine, since I am such a linux fan (go Ubuntu!).

Also, my own machine has a full backup every two weeks and incremental backups nightly, all automatically. I am a good choice for this task.

While I was installing utilities to back up another machine remotely, someone hit a utility pole about two blocks from the house. The power flickered, then went out.

The outage happened while settings files were being updated on my machine, it won't boot now. And! My (untested) backups turned out to have one small setting incorrect. I can't get them restored. Ouch.

And! the power surge fried my wireless router, so now I am using a laptop that Ican get close enough to the router to attach a 6 foot cable to.

My Saturday was frustrating. But I was able to use a boot CD to start up my desktop and copy all of my personal data (documents, family pix, music files and books on tape) to a portable hard drive. Even as I type this, my desktop is being reformated and reloaded with wonderful, wonderful Ubuntu. :)

Life! She is good. I believe I'll have some more!
