A Positive Out Of A Negative

I got some terrible news and some great news today. Both are about my wife.

Here's the back story. My wife has been battling major back problems for over 15 years and 5 back surgeries. It started when she was pregnant with our son, Devon. Many of you out there have heard about siatic nerve pain, ie "siatica". Like many women out there she had "S" during the pregnacy. But it didn't stop after the birth of our son. About two years later it was making her whole leg numb with loss of motion. The Doc's told her to stop being a hysterical mother and that it was only "S". Finally she got in to see a PA who asked if she ever had a back x-ray? Her answer was no. She had it done and left the office. Before she got home the PA called her back to discuss the findings. She had an unknown birth defect with the formation of her vertebrae, blah, blah(terms are too long and technical). The added weight from pregnancy aggravated it casing trouble. The fix would be surgery. 6 screws, 6 bolts, 6 rods, a removed tailbone(that's a totally different story) and bone graph later she was fixed. She recovered after a year of bed rest and bounced back pain free.

I continued with my career in the Army and became a Green Beret and we moved to Colorado. We were doing well all around.Until she got into a car accident (not her fault at all) that amazed everyone on the scene to include emergency personnel that she lived (another very long story). Nine years, a bunch more surgeries and enough pain meds to put an elephant in a coma she is living in a constant state of hell. Here life has pretty much been in bed everyday/allday(again way too much to talk about).

Recently, I had to leave for a month. So, she and my son went to the east coast to stay with my family(more drama). While there she stumbled upon a spine clinic on the web that was doing a new precedure and it' is located really close to where she is staying. All the clinic needed was a full spinal MRI. Too easy, she had it done and sent off the reports to the clinic.

The negative

(Oh, I guess all that other stuff was negative

but, remember that was only the back story)

THE NEGATIVE!

Today she got the results of her neck only. Two herniated discs and four bone spurs. Terrible right? No, Positive! We finally found something wrong. Alot of you don't understand how frustrating  it is to go to a doc, say you have pain, they can't find the source or can't figure out what it is and they think your wife there because she is a drug addict.

This is terrible thing to say and by no means do I mean to belittle or downgrade anyone's state of health.

But, Cancer patients have it easy. You go to the doc because something isn't right. The doc does a test, they get the results, they medicate, irradicate or cut it out, you recover and move on with life. Done deal.

I'm sorry about putting it in those terms, but I'm venting.

For over nine years my wife has been living (no she hasn't been living at all) with unbearable pain and the only thing her hundreds docs(literaly) can do is shrug thier shoulders and medicate.

It feels good to find one source of here pain. And the best thing about it that it can be treated with a fairly simple procedure, in and out with no recovery time. Will this get rid of all off her pain? No, but it's a damn good start. This is the first battle with more to come and eventually we will the war!

I'm just very happy right now and I can't keep it in. I had to let all you "Tools" know. And again I apoligize if I offended anyone.

Cheers!

That's great!

That sounds like a step in the right direction.  That is really great to hear and hopefully things go well for you all.  Take care.

good news!

always glad to hear that it could be a step in the right direction. its also good for you as well as your wife to see the positive and be in the positive for her. that takes alittle bit of the pain away for her.

I AM NOT SAYING ALL DOCTORS ARE BAD..... but im dealing with the similar issue with doctors and my mother. she has been to the hospital 3x in the last year for the same thing and all the want to do is adjust her meds insteat of trying to find what is wrong. it gets frustrating.

keep being strong and positive for your wife! hang in there!

That is good news!

Sounds like you guys have been through a lot. I hope that this really helps her and can improve her quality of life. I know people who live with constant pain, and it's really difficult. What a good man you are to be there for her all these years as a positive source of support. She is lucky to have you. I wish you the best and hope to be updated with more good news soon!
