BOOST TO BOOST

Hey! I've got a really silly tip that's worked for me the last few days. Everytime I tried to write something for my research in the past, I got really panicky and scared and started thinking about other things I would rather do. So I'd put it off until I could scrape enough courage together and the whole cycle would just start over. But then after reading your post, I realized that just thinking about it really won't get it done, and I absolutely HAVE to start working, because I have a seminar presentation on October 23. I took my laptop, sat down and started to write as though I'm trying to explain the concept of a renewal process (an introduction to the stuff my research is about) to someone who knows very little. LOL! and I realised that even though this is just introductory material that I was sure I had a firm grasp on, there were still some things that I found hard to explain, because I did not know the work as well as I thought I did. So now I get to 'learn over' while I write this rough introduction to my research. Writing in this way has relieved some of the pressure of trying to have a perfect publishable chapter on the first run. I'll just edit the obviously silly stuff out later and fill up the rough outline with more meat later on. But for now I really need to feel as though I'm making progress. I'm also going to let my prof know that I won't be handing in perfect chapters and topics every week, but that I will be working consistently. I know you need a lot more original content for your Ph.D than I need for my masters, but maybe starting from another angle will help. Good luck and have a lovely Sunday :)

Hi Dolan :) I'm also still trying to run from it everyday. I've succeeded as well, because I haven't done anything since Wednesday...It's weird how many excuses I can cook up. The best one is: "I need a rest once in a while!". Nevermind that I've been doing nothing BUT watching the time go by these past 6 months. Good luck, Dolan. I know it's hard...

I've progressed from the bottom of the class in primary school to doing a PhD in Physics. I had very low self esteem and confidence when i was very young. I managed to build that up over the years until I became a very capable and confident person.

I picked up a habit of smoking dope during my first degree. Thankfully I managed to control it and pause it during the final year of that degree and I achieved a first class honours!

This enabled me to get accepted for a Physics Phd. But I hit rock bottom during the second year. I was in a relationship that I didn't want to be in, but I couldn't bring myself to end.

I worked really hard in the Ph.D, but felt that I wasn't achieving well, and that my supervisor and colleagues thought I was a bit of a blow-in as I came from Engineering. I felt that I couldn't handle the theoretical side of my project. I developed a deep fear of my work.

Over a two year period I developed a mindset of self-pity and self-loathing.

I began to wish I was dead and I smoked dope constantly to block out my fears and wories, but this was only making things worse and worse, But I was trapped in a vicious circle, and found the addiction so hard to over come

I finally ended the relationship and I finally broke my addiction to smoking completely.

Both were painful experiences that took many attempts. I couldn't have done it without help from my friends.

I am now eating and exercising extremely well. And I'm pretty much back to my usual happy hard working self.

I've read many self help books over the years, but I'm finally feel like I'm progressing thanks to the tools program.
