Yoga

Hi folks.

I am 49 and am losing weight and strengthening my body.  For the first time ever I have taken up the practice of yoga but I'm having some trouble because of my size.

Have any of you 1.  done yoga when you have been over weight and out of shape? and 2.  are there ways to continue the practice by modifiying it so that I can stay on my knees?

This has become an important part of my day and am hoping there is some help for me.

Thanks

I just started last week.  I am overweight (not a lot, but enough to make it difficult and embarrassing) and a real "office desk rock" (so moving around is pushing my endurance).

I found through the internet this wonderful person who just gives classes with the cost of donations.  We have several in our class who are much older, much heavier, new to the idea, etc - she works with them all to do what they can.  She really stresses that it is OKAY if you can't, just go as far as you can and it gets better.

For me, it is my balance.  I have to do some of it against the wall.  It embarasses me, but she promises the benefit will be there, and it will get better.  The idea that a day will come where I DON'T have to touch the wall gives me a goal.  It makes it possible to keep trying.

So do work, with an instructor.  Let them find ways to modify, then make it a goal to get to the day NOT to use the modification.

I do believe that yoga will help.  It is the ONLY exercise that sees to take into account that we are not all at the same level, yet can work together.  Starters are starters, and some of us are at ground level - and it is not only accepted but encouraged.

Don't give up - just give in.  Let your body tell you what you can do, and work with what you have.  It gets better.

Thanks for all the encouragement.

Currently I'm not able to take a class so am doing everything at home with videos.  Hoping to find a class that fits my budget and my shyness.

Til again

Since you are on the computer already, the yoga journal site gives you so much info (see link I posted above).  For you, the modifications and the preparatory poses I think might be interesting for you to look at.

I agree with MandaZie...communicate a lot with your teacher.  There are so many things he/she can do with blankets and chairs and other props to gently grow those yoga muscles.

Believe it or not...someday you will see down dog as a wonderfully comfortable stretch that you use to rest in.  To me it's like a full body massage.  I think it will be to you someday as well.

Good luck.  Namaste.

Let me tell you, a great thing to do is talk to your instructor before class and let them know that you are very interested in making it work for you, but are interested in alterations and adjustments to the exercises that are right for your present ability level.  Tell them that you think they are a great teacher and are excited to do the class.  They should come and adjust you and give you advice, they may even have more insight to give you.  You are on the right track girlie!  I'm proud of you!

says: July 6,2007Doll, Yoga is for you..wherever you are that is where you are..if youwant to be on your knees or off, do the asanas where ever you are.  I have heard the breathing is most important..Although I don't think I do it right.  I started yoga when I was pregnant with my 2nd child wjp is now 40 something...continued through the whole pregnancy.  Nothing fancy.  I learned how to deep breathe which gave me a pain free childbirth. In yoga there is no competition you do it where you are, and with the ability you have for that pase, no pusching..I  am still using my first book, Yoga for American's by Indra Devi, she was the teacher of the stars in the 50's. Gloria Swanson, Heifitz,The book is a six weeks course, though I still am on week 4. Another good book is "20 minute Yoga Workouts" (American Yoga Association) with Alice Christensen. THis book will give you some  easy beginnings..Find some good ,music, meditative, it helps..Freya
