How do you know which career is yours?

Since some time I try to figure out where I want to go with my job-life and my career. At the moment I am working at a job I don't feel especially trusted, fulfilled and wanted. So I want to switch.

Problem: I don't know where I want to go to.

So:

How did you find out which job's perfect for you? Are there any ideas, tips and propositions how I should go about that? Which are your visions for you job/career/calling? (And trust me - I have already tried several books on that subject.)

Thank you so much for taking your time to answer me.

says: Hi Jullaboonfate I am presently asking myself a nearly similar question/problem. You wish to find out where you want to go to. I wish to decide for which entreprise/project I want to fully engage myself! and that is a scary subject. I have gone that road ( fully engaging myself) many times before, and it got to be more often than others quite consuming and overwhelming ( meaning I have been neglectfull of some key selfcare essentials).I wish this time to not burn from personal passion only, but truly collaborate with others in a much more balanced way and feel greatfull each day for my health, vitality and altruistic friendship. As a coach I have accompanied a few clients in MAPPING-OUT WHERE it was they wanted to go next in their lifes. YEP!drawing a map jotting down those towns (working environments, types of friendships,...personal achievments) you want to visit, experience, stay for a while, learn and grow from, or need to go to on your way to further destinations... Mapping can be fun and reflects your true personality. No two maps are the same. Don't forget to write "memorable events" or important "to see- and to-do wants" that you see yourself doing on this trip.Making it fun is the key! The most fun I've had, was sharing this mapping activity with a mapping buddy. Bon voyage! elise50

says: For me it has been about trial, error, and learning what my strengths and weaknesses are!  For instance, I really THOUGHT the job I that I'm in right now was going to be perfect for me.  I was so excited to land the job and now that I'm in it for almost 5 months, I can see that this job does NOT play up my strengths and it really emphasizes my weaknesses.  It's not right for me, but I would have never made this discovery if I hadn't tried it!

Hello - and what a great photo!

I wanted to say that there is a great book worth checking out - it is called "What Colour is Your Parachute?"

It is one of the best known books for helping people to make a career change. Its enormous and takes some wading through, but I think it would be a great book for you to start with, to at least explore some options.

I also wanted to say that whilst you look for another job (and I'm sure you'll find one) try to be completly honest with yourself about how you've peformed in your current job. I say this because I know myself - when I am procrasting, not trying, being late, forgetting stuff - I hate my job - truly hate it. When I am working really hard, getting things done on time, I love my job.

I hear what you are saying about where you are - is there anything you can do to change it while you are still there? I don't know the answer to that, but I'm sure you do.

I wish you luck.

I came to TOOLS to find out what job would make me happy. Now I know its not what job I do but How i do my job is the important thing.

As I focus on my job at hand I find more and more opportunities. As I love this moment the universe bring me more moments to cherish. I must now go and update my profile...Thanks for asking the question

Enjoy the present moment and all will be well

says: Really, it's all about knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Focus on your strenghts and forget about your weaknesses (or at least make sure they are needed very little in what you do). I have done MANY strength finding exercises, but the best I came across was strengthfinders. It's a book you buy, then go online and take the assesment. It is right on! Once you know your core strengths, go forward looking for something that best suits these. It might be something you never really considered before until you knew your strengths....once you discover them, things start to make a bit more sense. Anyway, you seem very interesting....I'd like to talk with you more about this sometime! Thanks, Mike
