Picture this
Interesting...when I read your above thoughts I realized that when someone says "picture this" I never actually "see" something. What I'm doing is thinking about how I would feel emotionally about that thing. When I hear someone say "picture what it will be like in a year when you reach these goals" I feel joyful and proud of myself and overall wonderful. So, guess I reherse the anticipated emotion as my way of "seeing" things. What's funny to me about this is that I'm normally a VERY visual person!
Wonder if others actually see things or not.......?
Try replacing the word...picture this
It is well known that in the world of mind function that approx 1/3 of people are visual, 1/3 audio the other third kinesthetic as their main function. Most of us use some combo of all three. You may be visually dominant with your external senses but audio dominant with your internal senses just an example.
So replace the word picture this with what do you feel this or what do you hear.

I do..
I can 'see'.. but i also hear, feel, taste and sense... which has its downsides..!!
when i did an NLP course, they asked us to visualise a past memory of something good... i visualised a day at the beach, but i could also hear the sea, kids screming and the seagulss. I could taste the salty sea air and feel the warm sun and gentle breeeze.. i felt like i was actually there and i was filled with a warm glow and felt relaxed and content...
Apparently i'm in the minority as most people can do one or the other but not all... the other weird thing about me is that althought i saw myself sitting in the middle of the beach with my sons... i was also sitting in the middle of the beach.. so i saw myself from one perspective and felt myself there from the other perspective.. not sure thats a good thing.. it probably means i'm a bit crazy in some way...!!
The bad thing about having this kind of recall is that it happens for good and bad things.. so when i think about or recallt he bad things that have happened to me in the past.. and there have been many... i feel that pain and fear all over again.. which makes it very hard to move on from some things...
I can forward visualise the same way as well... feeling, smelling, hearing, tasting and seeing the whole thing in colour but past memories are even stronger.. like i have travelled back in time and i am actually there.. very spooky at times...
have you tried looking at a picture of something similar for several minutes, then closing your eyes and meditating on it..? A friend of mine did this frequently until she no longer needed the picture.. It is possible to adjust your strengths, so if you are mainly auditory you can build you visual skills to equal your auditory skills.
