Finding My Place

I came into Tools to work on my relationships and my success story is about my writing.  The two maybe intwined.

I had a reading workshop last Tuesday and my writing was everything it should be.  It was controversal, garnered a response, and had people wanting more.  I have a buzz about my novel BEFORE the novel has come out!

The audience wanted to know more about the story and the characters.  They cared about what I had written and wanted to read more.

The greatest part about the workshop was how I felt about it.  I felt as if I had come home.  It was a success, because I had contributed something with my storytelling.

I have always been a storyteller, but I have been hesitent with my work.  Fiction is such a tricky thing.  On one hand people love a good story, but on another, the storyteller, is showing a world that only exists in his or her  mind.  That's why the question is, "is it true?"  Asking that question is the biggest faux pas in fiction writing and I got it at my reading.  I noticed how the people changed when they found out that none of what I had written happened to me.  They were disappointed and started to attack me.

I was thrilled that the story moved them and made them think, but I was sad that they did not see how what I created was art.  Good storytelling is conveying a universal truth just like a surearl painting, a beautiful sonata, or a captivating ballet performance.  That is what great art is.

I am an artist and this is my success story.
