Is "desperately in love" an oxymoron?

says: There are many kinds of love but I'm afraid the desperate kind is more infatuation than love. Unrequited love tends to run toward desperation too. Take your pick but I don't see either one as anoxymoron.

says: Just look at desperate housewives a few times, and no it's not desperate and love are different feeling or should be different, love and comfort are... Steve

says: Yes and it can be such sweet-surrender!

says: Monk,I think the question and your user name might be an oxymoron.  But desperately in love in my opinion is not.  Desperately; wanting something very much, or to a great extent, even urgently or frantically.  Love; feeling affection for, be devoted to, be fond of, or have a weakness for.  So lets put the two together..   Wanting something very much that you have a weakness for.  Chocolate for some women would fit.  Okay lets try another one.  Urgently or frantically be devoted to.  I think this might be applied to children, especially when they are hurt. Okay I’m having fun, so let’s do one more. Wanting something to a great extent that you are very fond of, like money for example. Love is a word that can (once again in my opinion) only be interrupted by the owner of the word.  So someone who might say I’m desperately in love with that beautiful girl, very well might be just that.  Or someone who says I’m desperately in love with making money very well might be.  Or someone who says I’m desperately in love with Chocolate and I can’t eat enough might will need a better diet.  The word desperately might seem like a needy word or even a habit.  Love is a giving word.  Ya the two don’t really match up but I don’t see the opposition. Or it might just be an oxymoron.. Good luck with the answer to that one.
