 Studying and observing mollusks and/or arthropods (the list of individual species was too long), in the field (Alaska, New Zealand, Madagascar... I'll even take Michigan) and in the lab, having my research published in a scholarly journal, and finally writing a book for the enthusiastic hobbyist...

 That's an unfair question - I couldn't choose just one. But to stay with the theme, I'll pick earthworms.
Why (describe as much as possible):
 1. Charles Darwin loved them. He said, "It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world, as have these lowly organized creatures." 2. They sometimes need help crossing busy streets when it's raining. 3. Scientists think a few species can "digest" pollution.
