Last Saturday Melbourne experienced its worst disaster.

Temperatures reached 46.4C (124 degrees) with a ferocious wind straight from the desert. It felt like being in a fan oven, and needless to say the vegetation from recent hot temperatures was tinder dry.

Fierce firestorms ensued resulting in well over 120 deaths so far with more expected over the next two weeks as the wreckage is sifted through. Whole towns (and pretty little towns they were) were literally wiped off the map along with their occupants who stayed to help save their properties. One of our friends is a trauma counsellor and told us that one business alone currently has 24 workers missing.

I guess we're all a bit disoriented here at the moment - it seems like a dream. However, we're in the process of gathering ourselves and rallying around those who have lost family/property or both. Australians are very compassionate, generous and by and large will instinctively help others in distress, so I expect there will be many offers of help, not only governmentally but also on a personal level. Collectively, we will make it.

In all this life moves inexorably forward..

Glad you are ok

I just saw one of the news reports...horrific experience for all of you.

Heartbreaking to even consider arson was involved.

Thanks for letting us know how you are.

You're not alone You're not alone

Holy Sh*t!

Stay safe.. And help as many as possible! Ive heard of 110 in VEgas, but never 124. Can you breathe in those kind of temperatures? Is there anywhere to stay cool. If its a desert, what is on fire, the underbrush? And with the wind that is not a good combo. Hopefully that changes. Best Wishes and give us updates please.

Definitely Take Care

You take care if you find yourself in a position of assistance. I once watched first-hand where a new home still in the framing stage went up in flames instantly due to a faulty propane heater. It basically took out 5 more houses within an hour.

I found myself in a position to help and was involved in helping save about 12 people from burning to death in total. Never once did I even consider the risk I put myself in entering houses that were literally already on fire to ensure nobody was left behind. Once it was all over, that is when I realized the true danger I had put myself in while helping others. It's good to be a hero, just make sure you live to tell the tale.

Thanks so much for your concern.

The amazing thing about these situations is that they really bring out the best - and I would say true nature - in people. Along with the tragedy there are some wonderful stories coming out involving heroism, generosity and compassion. They strengthen the sense of community which is inspiring.

We'll assist where and when we can. In fact Deso tried yesterday to donate money and the phone lines were engaged, and tried to volunteer his services as a JP (notary) for any legal issues and couldn't get through either - which is a good sign.
