The ultimate success formula. How to succeed...no matter what.

Today is a new day...a new moment...a fresh opportunity to show who I am...who I'm deciding to be.

I was reminded once again very recently of the value of persistence and wanted to briefly talk about it.

First, understand, you can have anything in the world you desire. Second, you can't have everything you desire. (Ironic, isn't it?)

So, if you set a goal that is outside your current comfort zone (which I hope most of your goals are), there's only one thing you have to do.

Be persistent and keep taking action until you get it.

That's it.

Here is a four-step formula for achieving everything you desire.

First is knowing EXACTLY what you want. I would add to this knowing exactly why you want (which ultimately is what will drive you to achieve it).
Second, write down an action plan. Decide that you want to obtain this goal no matter what. Start taking the actions that you've written down.
Third, notice if the actions you are taking are getting you closer or further away.
Fourth, if you notice that something is not working, take a different action until it does work.

THAT'S IT. If you follow the above instructions, you will get anything you want.

Sounds simple...and it is. The problem with all of us humans is we're constantly getting in the way of ourselves. Honestly, that success formula will get you to where you want to go, IF (and only if) you follow it. If you stop following it, you're dead in the water.

Nothing in this world happens without you doing something for yourself.

I would like to challenge you this weekend to take a look at your life and figure out where you want to go. Then, design an action plan to get there and start rockin'. I know you can do it. We've all done it in the past. Let's do it again. Whatever happens, persist and follow through. When you find yourself wasting time, break your state and go back to the success formula. When you find yourself making excuses, break your state and go back to the success formula. To make it simpler, when you find yourself not following the success formula, start again to follow the success formula.

KEEP ROCKIN'!

Adam

P.S. If your brain gives you excuses as to why you can't do something (let's say start working out again), let me share a small, brief story with you.

I was working the other day in a small office with a few people I knew. I was only going to be there for a few hours. One of the co-workers and I started talking about fitness. She gave me reason after reason why she couldn't do it (time was the main one...her daughter was in the midst of volleyball season). After she spewed her excuses, I asked her why she couldn't get up an hour early. She told me she would be too tired throughout the day.

I then asked her if I handed her $20,000 right now if she would get up one hour early for the next 45 days and go to the gym. She told me of course she would.

When you're making excuses in your head about why you can't do something, use the $20,000 test like the one above. If your answer is yes, and you would do it for $20,000, find a better reason to obtain your goal. Find a stronger why. If you have a strong why, you'll get your goal...no matter what.

I can give you many, many reasons to do something (like physical fitness)...but, they're my reasons...not yours. Find your reasons...make them strong...and they will pull you all the way to your goal.

Keep rockin'!

Decisions...destiny. Thousands of small decisions...One BIG DESTINY

I was driving today. For a while, I didn't have the radio on...I wasn't listening to my afformations...I wasn't listening to my self-help audio...

...so I began to think.

Decisions.

I came to the realization there are very few "big" decisions in life. Our lives are shaped by thousands of tiny decisions throughout each day that we are alive.

The decision of what we put in our mouths; if you're overweight, for most people, it comes down to what you put in your mouth every day and the amount of fitness you give yourself.

What time you wake up in the morning is a decision. Whether you hit snooze is a decision. Whether you iron your clothes every morning or make your bed is a decision.

EVERYTHING you do is prompted by a decision, which comes from an evaluation...the questions you ask yourself. Your decisions are your own; and yours only. Your decisions, granted, are influenced by other people, but, ultimately, you are responsible for every single one of them that you make...and you're making them ALL THE TIME.

"It is in our moments of decision that our destiny is shaped". That is very true. I'd like to add something to that.

If I make a decision to do something...let's say get in shape, it requires me to make the initial decision, which gives me direction.

Then, the next meal, I make a decision about what to eat, which affects the initial decision, positively or negatively...depending on what I've chosen. That night, I make a decision about whether or not to go to the gym (or do situps, etc.). The next meal, I make another decision.

I think people get caught up in the fact that if they fail to "keep" their decision, then it's over...meaning, if they eat a half of a chocolate cake one meal then they've failed in their objective. They haven't...the overall objective was to get in shape. Yes, this may have been a setback...but it was an extremely temporary one. Remember, there's another decision coming along in just a few hours. You have another chance this time to make the right one for you.

Keep rockin'!

Challenges...pain...solutions...LIFE

I went to the gym last night as usual. I felt great after I left.

During the second class, one of the participants on the other side of the room was loudly complaining. I wasn't paying too much attention for a while until the instructor started interacting with her. I got the impression that the lady hadn't come in about six weeks (by her own admission and decision). The instructor started talking about consistency and persistence...determination. I wanted to go kiss her (the instructor, I mean).

Whatever is happening in your life...whatever obstacles you're up against; whatever challenges you're facing, I want you to remember something.

Everything is temporary, including pain (physical, emotional or mental). Time heals that beautifully, if you want it to be healed.

The harder you push, the more results you will get. Notice I didn't say better. If you work harder (and by proxy, quicker), you will get quicker results. The beauty of that is, if you get quicker results, you can re-evaluate more quickly than you otherwise could have, thus changing your life more quickly.

Whatever challenge you're facing, if it seems overwhelming, try the next few steps...

Take out a piece of paper.

Write down the challenge.

Write down all of the steps needed to overcome the challenge. If you don't know what the steps are to overcome it, write down what you have to do in order to find out how to overcome it. If you still don't know what to do, find someone who has gone through a similar challenge (there will be someone in this world, no matter what it is you're going through...you can trust that you're not alone in this). Call them or write to them. Contact them as quickly as possible. Most people in this world want to feel like someone else cares about their opinion. You contacting that person asking for their help and opinion will be great for them.

After you've written down all of these steps, take out another piece of paper and write down why you're doing it for yourself. What are you going to gain from it?

Now, write down all the pain you'll get from not taking action and completing this challenge. Use the rocking chair approach. Go out twenty years and find out how it will affect you if you don't do it.

I want you to remember something. If you do the same things and think the same thoughts, your life will not change; guaranteed.

If you want your life to be different, change your actions and thoughts. That part is easy to do. It's the follow-through that we stupid humans always have trouble with.

Remember, whatever you focus on consistently is what you're going to get. What are you focusing on today? What kind of questions are you asking yourself? Are you trying to live on purpose? Are you living consciously?

I challenge you to "get back in the game" as it were. Start right now. Don't wait until tonight or tomorrow or Monday. Do it now.

Keep Rockin'!

Adam

I've got a week of vacation coming up next week. I'm very excited about it. I've got a jam-packed schedule. Monday and Tuesday, I've scheduled five certification tests (my job schedule is so fluid, I can't schedule them during the week...Microsoft also just made, in my opinion, one of the worst decisions ever and decided to go with only one test vendor. That would be an ok decision, save for the fact that none of the testing centers (within literally 400 miles) are open during the evenings or weekends...so vacation testing it is!).

Tuesday afternoon, I'm finishing the website of the place where I volunteer and getting it up and running. This past weekend, I built their server, which I'm donating to them (that was a feat in and of itself...it wasn't difficult, it just took about seven hours to completely update it...my wife's getting a little perturbed...it's sitting on our formal dining room table...it's a Dell PowerEdge 2650 with a Powervault on top (for extra storage)...so it's taking up quite a bit of room). After I get the website up and running, I'm going to rack the server and get that going.

Thursday is Thanksgiving, during which I'll be celebrating with the family.

Friday is back doing computer work for the place at which I volunteer, studying and working out...like a normal day (only I won't be doing my "day" job).

A teacher asked me once (in high school) what I would do if I had a million dollars? That stuck with me. What would I do if I didn't HAVE to do anything?

I'm very happy when my brain says with 100% certainty that I would do exactly what I'm doing.

I honestly believe if I won the lottery, for example, or had a wealthy relative leave me a lot of money, not many people would ever know. I would be taking very few different actions. I would probably travel more.

Beyond that, I would still do what I'm doing. I'd still work out. I'd still study like a madman. I'd still "do" computers. I'd still be a dad. I'd still do the dishes. I'd still do my own laundry. I'd still be me. The only difference is I'd be me with the ability to buy my own island in Fiji...

If I took everything away from you right now...EVERYTHING...took you to a deserted island...dropped you there with all of your material needs taken care of...food and shelter mainly...I left you with 10 notebooks and a box of pens...told you that you had one objective...to come up with and write down what you REALLY wanted to do with your life...what would it be?

Here's one more for you...

If you come up with an answer to the above question, what are you going to do right now to get you to that point? Now that you have the desire...the burn in your belly for your true passion, how are you going to make it happen?

I ask this question a lot to the people in my sphere of influence. Many people give me legitimate answers...I would (fill in the blank). It always amazes me, however, when I hear some people tell me they would do nothing or just be lazy. Well, that's fine for a time, but there's a guarantee there that you would go out of your mind after a time because of the certainty factor.

What would you do?

What would you do with the rest of your life if you didn't have to worry about paying your bills...didn't have to worry anymore about making the mortgage or the car payment? What would you do?

Now, go do it!

Keep rockin'.

Adam

It's about the time where I sit down and re-evaluate my plan for the week I'm currently in.

I'd like to challenge you tonight to make this rest of this week your best few days ever. If that is outside of your paradigm of your capabilities, pick just one area of your life...like eating or fitness or career or whatever. Then, MAKE IT GREAT.

We've come exactly to where we are right now by the decisions we've made...big or small. Most of the decisions have been unconscious. We haven't really thought about them...we just floated. And...that's ok. Because right now you have the choice to make it great.

Sit down right now and write out what you want. If you don't want to do it, just pick ONE thing. Then, write down the steps to get from where you are to the accomplishment of the thing you just wrote down. Make sure that if someone you don't know (and won't have a chance to talk to) comes up and looks at what you wrote that they'd be able to do it as well...make it that detailed.

Then, write down why you want to do it. Remember, purpose is stronger than outcome. You must have strong reasons why you're doing something...or you won't do it.

Make your life great. You have the choice. You hold your own destiny in the palm of your hand. Just DO what you know you need to do.

If you find yourself procrastinating because you believe it might be painful (and I know what that feels like)...get up and MOVE yourself immediately. Change your state. Jump around. Yell at the top of your lungs. Dance. Whatever you have to do to get yourself to START the action to achieve your objective.

Design your ultimate life...then start living into that new picture of yourself.

Keep rockin'!

Adam

What prompted me to write today here was I had a dream about my wife (was staying in a hotel last night about 3.5 hours away from home). She just happened to be in it...more or less...off to the side, as a passive participant, watching what was occurring in the dream.

Well, it made me miss her, so I called her up this morning upon waking up to tell her so; and to tell her I loved her.

One of the "games" I play psychologically with myself is to ponder the fact of when I'm doing to die. I ask myself the question frequently, "If I die today, how do I want to live today?".

Asking that question of myself has literally made me turn around in my driveway (we have a long driveway) after an argument on my way to work just to say I'm sorry to my wife. Because, I truly never do know when I'm going to die. It wouldn't matter to me, as I wouldn't be here in human form anymore, but I think it would make my wife feel guilty (and vice versa if the situation were reversed).

We, as humans, get so caught up in living that we never think we're going to one day not be living.

Live today as if you were going to die. Choose to play full out. Call someone you need to call and tell them you love them. Choose to make your relationship great. Work at it...or get out of it.

If you were living with someone who made you feel like you couldn't be YOU, then, why put yourself through it? I want to be me. I want to be with someone who wants me to be me (which I am, don't get me wrong). I have been in relationships before (my first wife was one) where the other person thought I was too over the top...too passionate...too boisterous. I've actually been told before (this by my ex-wife) that she was afraid to go someplace with me because of fear of what I'd say (of course, she was/is an INTJ...I'm an ENFJ...not exactly a "perfect" match).

If you knew there was a possibility you were going to die today...or next week...or next month...or next year, what would you make different in your life? Choose to start living full out. It's a conscious process...but a process well worth the effort.

Keep rockin'.

Adam
read more...

If you build two train tracks side by side running parallel to each other, then change one of the tracks to be 1 degree off from the other track, it won't make much difference over the short term. However, if you continue traveling on the train that has made the slight shift, over the long run, it is a HUGE difference.

That's the way it is in life. You make one small change...barely noticeable to even yourself. But that one small change precipitates another small change, that one yet another. Before you know it, your life is headed in an entirely new direction, just by you making small, simple, consistent changes.

I'm very glad that I can come together with people who have a desire to improve their lives. We're all here, helping each other...pushing each other...motivating each other...making each other better than we thought we could be...a little at a time.

Whatever goal you're going towards...whatever dream it is you have...keep pushing forward....for it is only in our moments of action and decision that our life is shaped.

Whatever you're doing...

Keep rockin'!

Adam
read more...

Getting towards the end of the week...fresh new opportunity

Aaahhh...the end of the week. A great time to reflect on what's been accomplished...how far we've gotten on our goals...on the things we truly want for our lives.

If you're living your goals, keep rockin'! If you've struggled this week and didn't accomplish what you set out to do, it's ok. Tomorrow starts a brand new day and a fresh new opportunity.

One of my favorite authors has a quote; "it doesn't matter if you failed last year, or you failed six months ago, or you failed last week, or you failed yesterday, or you failed a moment ago...all that matters is what are you going to do right now?"

What are you going to do to make your life the way you want? What are you going to do right now?

Remember, your life is shaped by the decisions that YOU make every day. NOBODY else in the worlds makes your decisions. It is true that other people have influence over your decision making. However, when all is said and done, at the end of the day, your life is shaped by (and your successes and failures are a result of) the decisions you make. NOTHING ELSE.

You have the opportunity to step up right now and live life on your terms. Design your life the way you want it.

I don't want to come to the end of my life and ever say to myself, "I wish I would've". That to me would be ultimate pain. I want to live my life full out while I have the opportunity. I know that I'm going to die someday. So are you...guaranteed. Choose to make your life great.

If you're procrastinating today, choose to not procrastinate...for one day. Face the thing you're not doing. DO IT. It will be worth it in the long run.

Take action. Take massive action. Work like you've never worked before. For one day, demand more from yourself than you ever have before. Demand more from yourself than anybody would ever expect. You will surprise yourself with what you can do.

Turn off the TV. Forget about it. It won't hurt you to miss one day...or, if you really want to change your life, unplug your TV from the wall and cut the cord with a pair of scissors. Tell your brain you're making a real decision. Literally, cut off the possibility of you wasting time in front of the TV. Better yet, give your TV away to someone else. Let them waste time. You've got living to do.

Design your life NOW. Start living your life NOW...not years from now. Time will pass...with certainty. Focus on the pain that will occur if you let time pass and haven't taken action like you know you should have. Take out a piece of paper and write down what you really want. Draw out a plan to get it. Then, take the first step. I know you can do it. You've accomplished things before. It's just a matter of DOING IT.

Keep ROCKIN'!

Work has been getting a little busy lately. Yesterday was a 15-hour day. However, I did take lunch.

I found when I got to the hotel yesterday, I did not have ANY desire to go to the gym. I was tired. It pissed me off a little. I became angry with myself for making the decision not to go. I tried to use all my tricks to motivate myself. It wasn't happening.

So, I didn't go.

Now, anyone that knows me personally would know that would prey on my mind. So, I asked myself how that wouldn't happen again. How can I make it so that, no matter what, I can work out when I'm supposed to?

My brain came up with a simple answer. Put the weights that I have in my office that I never use (since I go to the gym) into the back of the car I drive everyday. If I know that day is going to be a long one, I pull them out after lunch and work out, no matter where I am...no excuses. (I know I'll look funny...can you imagine a guy with a shaved head in khakis, dress shoes and polo shirt doing bicep curls with dumbbells in a parking lot somewhere? I'll be lucky if I don't get arrested.)

Remember, if something is a MUST for you, you will make it happen, NO MATTER WHAT.

Start living life the way you want. Live life on YOUR terms, not someone elses' terms.

If you're not living life to the level you know you deserve, sit down right now and take the first step. Design your life, map out your goals to your specifications.

1 of 1000 - CHECK

Now, take the second step. Go to the first goal and the massive action plan you've designed for yourself. Take the first step towards that specific goal.

2 of 1000 - CHECK

...and keep rockin'!
