says: One of the hardest things to do in our competitive society is learn to like ourselves as we are - like before love, then love for strength and leading the life we really want. But the message - direct or indirect is - you are a failure - too fat, too thin, too tall, too short...too something..not something else enough. The message we are really getting is - hate yourself. And what better way to demonstrate hate for self than to cut - to do physical damage in a way that demonstrates your contempt for yourself to others. In a way, cutting oneself allows one to control the damage being done - you are doing it to you, so maybe you are protected from others doing it in some other way (i.e. abusing you). But it doesnt work that way - the only way to protect yourself from others is to develop yourself as your own best friend and ally. Best of luck.
says: Cutting is bad because it's self-harm. It can also cause infections, and serious injury, never mind scars. It can also create a cycle of shame, hiding and pushing away people who care, like all addictions. It's said people do this out of emotional pain, or to "feel alive" or to cry for help, or as a type of addiction brief high. Whatever the reason, it is a seriously un-loving thing to do to the self, and can get way out of hand, becoming an addiction. So a person should seek help for it, with an informed and caring professional.
