Sing It Out, Girl

An opera and jazz singer, C is a close friend.  She was just telling me about PDQ Bach, a clever musician and author who spins comedy. She sang out parts of his comical songs, played out the acting parts, explained the musical terms, and the in-jokes.

Part of me is listening and laughing so hard. PDQ Bach claims he is the unnoticed son of Bach. If you enjoy opera, or lyrical comedy,  or tongue-in-cheek mockery, check out his site, or books, or songs.

As I listen to her dramatize PDQ Bach, I'm warmed in my heart, and admiring, at the talent and skill of my friend.  I appreciate her so much, as a compassionate, funny, loving person. And also the gifts she has. It's really FUN, to listen to or watch anyone as they goof around with their talents. A doctor who pretends to treat your doll. A priest who stands soleumly over the grave of your gerbil. An actor who shifts into someone obnoxious at your cafe table. A CPA who whips through the calculations for your ...whatever...in three seconds flat, and grinning, hands it back to you. And I sit amazed as someone piles up three, four, five, six plates and glasses, on a practiced arm, to walk them to a table of friends.  Or the hairdresser who goons everyone up for Halloween.

There's years, YEARS, of so much hard work and ability, displayed in such a moment. As well as good nature, and wisdom, and humor. This singer friend struggles as so many of us do, with health, family and other problems. Yet she gives us all her gifts, and uplifts my personal world.
