Running on the treadmill help

Hi everyone

I'm currently doing walking on the treadmill but I'd love to be able to run longer distances than i can. Currently, I can only run for about 2-3 minutes before I have to stop.

I'm sure there are some healthy fitness-minded people here who I'm hoping might give me some pointers on how to ease into this.

Should I try to extend the time I run by eg 5 minutes each day, or 10 minutes a week? How long should i be running/walking for, and for what distance? What running distance should i aim for?

All pointers gratefully appreciated

cheers

says: Hello!! When I started running, I decided this way: 1) I jogged, but up to my limit (for three days) 2) Then in the fourth day I upgraded speed at the end of my running. 3) After this, I kept moving up and up, speed and miles... After 3 months I could ran 7.5 miles in 1hour and 10 min. Good luck!!!

I agree with above. Alternate running and walking. Better yet, find a running store in your area and take their learn to run course. They start with 20 minutes.

1 min run 2 min walk 3-4 times a week for 1 week

1 min run 1 min walk

2 min run 1 min walk

3 min run 1 min walk

You get the picture. in 12 weeks you can run 10 minutes and walk 1 minute between.

Works like a charm.

Yep, Raich nailed it.  Alternate from run-walk-run-walk-run-walk.  Great way to build up you cardio as well.  Run at a good clip for 1 minute and then walk until you are ready to run again, start with 3 or 4 minute interval. Repeat this scenario for 20-30 minutes.  Once you get used to that either add 30 seconds to the run or cut down the amount of time you walk.  So it goes like this:

warmup with a 4 minute walk

run for 1 minute

walk for 4

run for 1

etc....

Then change it up when you are ready to

run for 1:30

walk for 4

etc....

Hope that helps a little!!
