Across the Universe

copy/pasta'd from my livejournal entry about this film from my first viewing of it. (http://roseofmalice.livejournal.com/287446.html)

I saw Across the Universe this afternoon and I'm in utter love. Even more love than I knew I would be. It is an amazing film and, as of the date of this journal entry, the only movie to which I have given a 5-star rating. It is THAT amazing.

Across the Universe is imaginative, gritty, open, and real. More than a few scenes had me crying buckets of tears.

My favourite scenes/songs are: "I've Just Seen a Face", "Let it Be", & "Strawberry Fields Forever". I've Just Seen a Face is great fun at a bowling alley and definitely a scene I would love to recreate someday.

Let it Be is an emotional scene full of the harsh reality of riots and racism. (It's one of the scenes that had me crying.)

Strawberry Fields Forever is an artistic explosion that combines Max's experience in Vietnam with Jude's troubles with Lucy and the protests in the United States. It's an inspiring scene; I love the strawberries on the white canvas. To me each strawberry represented a soldier and the juice from the strawberries was a metaphor for the American blood being shed in a country where we were not wanted.

Other performances of note (besides Jim Sturgess & Evan Rachel Wood) are Bono and Eddie Izzard. Bono as Doctor Robert was an interesting scene. As always, Bono was a great singer but I feel his mustache distracted me a couple of times. Eddie Izzard was also amazing. It was great to see him in gaudy makeup again. (LOL)

All-in-all, this movie was worth the hour drive and the ticket price. I honestly think I should pay them more for entertaining me and inspiring me this much.
