The Inner Voice

Just curious on other people's thoughts..

What if your inner voice isn't always the helpful one like the program suggests.

My inner voice tells me "I'm tired  and I should take a nap in the middle of the day", "sleep a little longer", "eat that slice of pizza, it's only one slice".

I recognize it's a choice to listen to the voice...but if the voice is supposed to be providing us with "answers", when it tells me to take a nap, maybe that it just what i should do?

I guess my question is, you can't always listen to your voice. How do you come to know when to listen or ignore it?  I get the impression with the program that you shouldn't ignore it, you should listen to what it's saying. If that was the case I'd be doing all sorts of "counterproductive" things all day long.

For example, If it's the napping thing - maybe I am mentally exhausted and it's the best thing I can do? Or maybe I'm just feeling discouraged by the day and want to escape for a while?

Any thoughts?

I think a major point to remember is that we sort of have a "chorus" of voices, all with different jobs to try and help us, non of them are "bad or "wrong" they each have a different way of handling a situation. I believe the inner voice that is referred to in Day 5 is the balanced voice, this voice that insists on you doing what is best for your given situation. This voice often competes with a slew of childish, rebelios, guilty, overmothering voices. A great way to determine the voice is to listen to its tone. It will be kind, but firm. It won't say, "Come on, lets take a nap, I'm tired of this (insert activity here)" It would say, "My, I am very tired, I can feel the fatigue in my body, feel my eyes, they ache, my head is so heavy. I think I am overdoing it. The best thing to do here would be to stop for awhile."

Does that help?

 - ironically  my therapist does a lot of voicework with me, despite Devlyn's comments in his post about therapy. While it does take longer than life coaching claims to, I think it's depth helps to explain the reasoning behind why certain behaviors develop, and awareness lets you move forward...be aware of all of your voices, and use the "inner voice" as a guide to help you determine the validity of your needs.

Hi Calypso,

As I can, I get around and answer questions and yours is one that I would like to offer you a little help with.

To start, you are on day 5, as you continue the program your inner voice will get stronger and many of the questions you are asking will be answered by you.

Your inner voice knows the truth, your inner voice knows what you should do and that if taking a nap is escaping or not.  We all know the things we need to do and if what you are hearing is negative reinforcements, this means you have created a big gap between you and your inner voice.  Your inner voice does not want you to eat pizza, nap or other negative things.

It's kind of like the image of the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other.  Your real inner voice is the angel wanting you to move your life in positive directions.  The other voice exists, but I do not think of that as an inner voice, but rather as an outer voice trying to push me in the wrong direction.

For now, keep following the program.  Use the checklist.  Say hello to your inner voice and trust that over time things will become more clear.  As you do, get honest with yourself and ask yourself is what I am deciding good for me or not?  Over time as you do this you will know what you should do.

Hope this helps for now and keep going!
