blown ego

When i graduated high school i joined the US Army.  I was active duty for four years.  During this time i learned to fire PATRIOT missiles.  Though this job it has caused me to over analze things in my life that dont need to be, but when it was what i did for four years of my life it was natrual.  I cant talk about what my job was about or even use the lingo but you can imagine what its like when you're 18 or 19 years old tring to figure out weather you need to kill someone with a missle or not.  Anyways......when i got out i was 22 and there really wasnt much of a demand for people to fire missiles in the civilian world.  I got a job at a local soy bean plant loading soy bean meal into railcars and semi's.  Starting pay when i started was $13.30 and now it is $16.37....over $3 in less then the 3 years i worked there (and in iowa $16.37 out of high school is a good wage).  So I leave this job to work for my dads girlfriend inspecting houses for a living.  I do this for awhile and the company that gives us these houses is going out of business.  My own girlfriends dad ends up laying me off about 2 weeks ago.  Plus my girlfriend and I just bought a house.  I had one of the most tech. jobs in the Army with a high level of education, had a job where i made close to 50G's last year, and now i cant even get a job at Starbuck's.  This just really tears me up inside because of the fact that i cant get a job.  I just feel worthless and have no clue what to do other then just keep looking for jobs and going to school.  Anyone got any words of wisedom?

Yes - Your life is in front of you

Active duty is to be congratulated.  Thank you for your service to our Country!

There are several companies that favor former military with hiring. I would recommend you touch base with the Army and investigate what they know about job placement opportunities and services. Also, get in touch with any former Army buddies and see what they can share with you.

In addition, I would recommend that you start the Get A Job program.  The first day has you evaluating your experience while the second day encourages you to thoughtfully consider what you would like to do......both short term and long term.

The rest of the program is geared toward pursuing jobs in an effective fashion and helps with outlook and attitude with affirmations.

I know it is hard to be without a job.  The key is to stay upbeat and engaged in the process of looking. Remember, you life is in front of you.  You will get through this!

What do you really enjoy?

A few year ago I felt like you do however I decided to pursue a career in A/V installation like home theatre - it's what I always loved even as a child.  Now I'm happy in my own business despite not always make heaps - I love what I'm doing.

My advice is find out what you really love to do and do your best to pursue it as a career - and don't listen to the 'ney seyers'

Live your best life - now!

thanks

Thank you for your imput Brenda but those companys you talk about are not around here.  Plus with my little brother I am not willing to move.  And I know what my passion is and its coaching.  The problem witht that is is that you can not make enought though coaching at local high schools, but i understand what both of you mean and thank you.  My spirts are still high but when you go from felling on top to the bottom its a rough fall.

Keep coming back to tools

I'm so sorry.  I know you have been through a lot in your life.  It is rough when the bottom falls through.

I had a different kind of bottoming out when I was your age.  Both my parents died and I was devestated.  I did my best and moved forward.  that is hw I know you will be able to do the same.

Yes, embrace your loss.  But keep moving forward.  There is a lot of content here on the site to comfort you. Check out the inspiration section - I have 60+ articles relating to job seeking and Coach Steele has doezens and dozens in addition to the podcasts.

I want to reassure you you will get through this.  Take life one day at a time.  And keep coming back and using your tools...and reaching out to the community.

keep your chin up
