Confidence in kids

Hi!

A very simple question. How do you build confidence in children.

I have a 11 year old that lacks confidence, and I can see other kids always picking on him and making him the butt of their jokes.

How can I, as a parent help him build his confidence.

Thank you for that, he's tried taekowondo (not sure how to spell that), tag rugby and is now in basketball ...

I'm worried that high school kids are going to make him feel really bad, and not do much to boost his confidence.

as a parent I want the best for him, in school, in social life etc.

Thanx again for the comments .

I don't know what is available in the UK, but there has to be something similar to kid's activities here. My Son Just turned 12 and he hasnt had those problems - this is the reason - I got him involved in Boy Scouts when he was 5!

The interaction with boys his own age, the good values and lessons that they teach, the summer camp experience, the respect that they have to EARN along with the badges and awards, keeps them grounded - they learn community spirit, good sportsmanship and helping others gives them an ego boost as well as having adults recognize them for their efforts and give them added responsibilty.

They get to do derbies, outside activities and other bonding activities as well.  If this is something that  you have in the UK and it might interest your son, you can check with your community for the local Den - he is old enough to be a Boy Scout, not a Cub.

The other thing that my son has is band, it has given him things to focus on.  There is also Sports or other things associated with school that might catch his interest.  Micci

hmm...I suppose I shouldn't respond without a definitive answer.  My boys are a couple of years younger, but I have heard a lot of parents say...and for that matter a lot of confident adults say...that when their kids (or they) were young they lacked confidence until they joined a karate class.  If you find it too violent -- perhaps a Tai Chi class?  We have talked about it with our 8 year old -- who seems to have gained confidence in performance and theatre (though, admittedly, that's not for everyone).

Does that help?
