Yoga

Hi folks.

I am 49 and am losing weight and strengthening my body.  For the first time ever I have taken up the practice of yoga but I'm having some trouble because of my size.

Have any of you 1.  done yoga when you have been over weight and out of shape? and 2.  are there ways to continue the practice by modifiying it so that I can stay on my knees?

This has become an important part of my day and am hoping there is some help for me.

Thanks

Thanks!  I know...slow and steady.

Now I have a foot injury as well so taking it even slower.

you are all great!

says: Rachel888 is right...take it slowly...each day will get a little better.Consistency is the answer.Stay focused on your goal. Think of it as learning a new way of living...a long term change...not a short time quick fix which is what our society seems to demand.

says: Great suggestions from Wordbird. I have done yoga for years and love it. Lots of that time I was overweight and unfit. Yoga is not about a 'perfect' pose so much as just doing what your body tells you both feels good AND is also a challenge....at least some of the time. I never do it alone. I am fortunate to be in a small town with a GRRREEEAAATT leisure centr with awesome teachers, classes

says: Hi. I just bought a Yoga + Joyful Living magazine. To inspire myself to try it. I meditated and did Tai Chi many years ago--both were fabulous for my health and life. Yoga I keep hearing though how good it is for you in so many ways. I have heard advertisements for CD's and tapes especially with titles like "Yoga for the Rest of Us" (those with injuries, less flexible, weight issues, or elderly..the rest of us! lol) and I've seen Yoga classes where you do everything from a chair. So easy going starter Yoga is out there. Try a search maybe Beginner's Yoga or Baby Boomer Yoga...I've seen real-time classes too at the YMCA etc. for beginners, elderly, etc. I hope you find one near you, or a tape or CD. Everyone who bends like a pretzel started out as a person who fell over or lost their balance or had health or coordination issues. So don't think Yoga is only for the super flexible.

says: I'm not doing yoga but I do karate. I'm not overweight but I have some friends who practice karate and they are not as flexible as others and they keep going. I think you should have fun, do your best and soon then you think you will be able to do some moves that you were not able to. Continu your good work. Helbie

I simply add my encouragement.  I have done yoga for years and believe that it is one very important aspect of getting into or maintaining shape.

Repetition is the mother of skill.  The more you do things over and over, the easier it will get.  That is definitely true with yoga.  If you take some of the more challenging poses for you...the ones that frusterate you...list them out on a checklist that you have to do X of them each day.  Maybe start with just one challenging pose and then add a second to your checklist next week.  I found that if I didn't dedicate some daily time instead of just doing them in class...the frustration lingered.  If you dedicate even 5 minutes a day outside of class (being careful to be amply warmed up - no injuries), you will see results and the pose will get easier and easier.

No matter what...keep it up.  Yoga has been a great journey for me and I'm so glad it's a part of my life.  I hope it will be for you as well.

says: Yoga is very relaxing... as you do it everyday you will find how your body is able to that much more.. it helps give a good balance between your body and mind. Ofcourse one should never rush into it... it takes time but is well worth it.. dont u ever give up...

says: thanks for the info!

says: Hi!  I have done yoga, and I have definitely been overweight doing it.  It was truly amazing how my body strengthened without my realizing it.  The classes I have taken have always been full of very fit people, but my experience has been that everyone is focusing on themselves.  I never felt like anyone else cared how well (or not!) I was doing, because everyone seems to be on their own journey.  I can still remember how amazed I was when, after just a couple of months, going twice a week, I could hold my entire body weight on my hands, or do a headstand.  I always went at my own rate and did the transitions and such however I could - which wasn't always proper form at first, believe me.  The thing is, as you continue to do it, you will find that you'll be able to do more and more.  Just do what you can, your body will catch up.  Just be gentle with yourself, both physically and emotionally.  I'm so happy for you that you've found this.  I always say that it's like getting a massage from the inside - all the sudden you'll realize that your usual aches and pains have abated!  Good luck!

Hi there.  I have done a form of Yogo before many years ago. I have to be honest and felt that before trying it, that it wouldn't be that effective.  HOWEVER, I was totally wrong!! It gave me a great workout, and really refreshed my mind.

As for positions, there are differing ones out there that involve sitting/lying, and trust me they do the business exercise wise!!

Thanks for the words of wisdom!

I have most difficulty with any poses where there is direct pressure on my knees...so that would be many transitional type moves..going from the floor to standing or downward facing dog and even child's pose is sometimes painful.

Any poses done while standing, although by balance is still strengthening, I can generally handle ok.

This is definitely a new journey for me and one I'm really excited about.

YES! Yes! Yes!.  Yoga is meant to be modified according to ones own body.  The beauty of yoga and weight loss/strengthening and flexibility is that as you connect to your own body, you will make new choices about foods, your body will ask to stretch on its own and you will begin to listen to it.  You body goes into balance in so many ways with yoga. The most important about yoga is to go only to your edge.  There is no point in hurting yourself...it is is a method of trusting yourself.  If something hurts while doing yoga your body cannot relax into the posture and then it won't trust the posture.

What postures do you enjoy? and what is difficult for you?  I can assist in modifying them and also show you how to use props to help with the alignment.

Keep it up!!!!
