How to use your body's natural cycle to make your workday easier.

Well in order to make the most of my day using Ayurveda doshas I had to first understand them.  Some people have their opinions on what goes were so I had to do research and figure it out for myself.  Well first of all Ayurveda is an Indian system of holistically seeking balance through adjustments.  It’s Hindu for complete knowledge of the totality of life.  With that said I went out to find out how the different times of day affects productivity.

Pretty much it works like this you have the day broken up into 6 doshas.  Doshas are the inherited traits of in this case the sidereal day.

Vata – 2-6 am & 2-6 pm

Kapha – 6-10 am & 6-10pm

Pitta – 10-2 am & 10-2 pm

Ok, that’s good to know but what the heck does that mean for me?  Well let me tell you.

During the first kapha period of 6-10 am it is best to do some mundane tasks. This is your slow and steady period were you can stand to be on autopilot.   You like the earth at this time are alert yet quiet.  Think of what it is like outside at 6am.  Not much commotion, you can hear the birds chirping, the sun coming up and the world waking up.

Some things to do at work during this kapha time are:

·         Emails

·         Filing

·         Cross some items off your to do list

·         Printing

·         Update calendar

·         Do some research on the internet

·         Read.

The next dosha period during the workday is the 10-2 pm pitta time.  This is the time when you really want to rock and roll because your energy is going up.  It’s when you can strategize, make new goals, analyze, organize, be discriminating.  It’s when your intellect is at its peak.  It’s when you and the people you talk to and work with are the sharpest and ready for a challenge.

This whole Ayurveda thing is contingent upon you taking good care of yourself and eating when you need to as well so at some point between 10:30 am and noon eat a good lunch not just a candy bar from the vending machine and go for a 10 min walk afterwards.  What you do at this point of the day will make a difference in the rest of your day and into the next as well.

Some things to do at work during this pitta time are:

·         Phone calls

·         Meetings

·         Important tasks

·         Tasks that take energy/focus

·         Make plans

·         Organize.

The vata period is next.  It’s from the time of 2-6pm.  This is when you will be the most creative and innovative.  From 2-6 you want to put on your thinking cap and do all the things that might need a look from a different perspective or just some creativity.  It is your problem solving time.  You will also want to make your list for tomorrow’s kapha time.  This serves two purposes. The first is your creative juices are flowing and you can get them on paper.  The second is during your kapha time tomorrow you will be able to do what at that time you do best which is follow directions.

Some things to do at work during this vata time are:

·         Brainstorm

·         Blog

·         Search for solutions

·         Make action lists for the next day.

After using Ayurveda doshas to organize your day you should be more productive and effective and be able to enjoy your next kapha period from 6-10 pm when you will do best to spend time with family and friends and get ready to rest instead of having a pile of work that you have to take home.  Here is one last tip, instead of taking work home in the evening try to save some of your mundane tasks for Saturday to do during your morning kapha time from 6-10 am.  Or schedule a meeting during Saturday’s pitta time. You won’t even notice it because you will be going with the stream instead of against it.

It’s something to think about.

Very good

Hello:

That was not only well written, but informative and engaging. And definitely worth considering.

I will attempt to actually bring its effect to bare in my schedule. Thanks.
