I remember the idea of creating OPPORTUNITES out of conflict the first time I went through ttl. And it is so true! In looking at the situations/problems/issues in life as an OPPORTUNITY, we take a different approach towards their solutions.
My son is a recovering addict. He is doing quite well, now. Through this program I discovered what 90days could do for me. When we as a family approached him about his problem, he only wanted to go to a 20 day rehab. We said no, minimum of 90 days required. He tried to negotiate, sweep it under the rug, slide it through in under 30, and simply try everything he could to get it reduced, but we remained insistant. I told my son, you need a minimum of 90days to start seeing the truth and reality for change, 90 days is a fair shot. Well, He made it 80 some days and came home. He slipped off course a few times, but (HOPEFULLY, another year later), he has his head on straighter and has a goal of forward from here... as sober.
Just a few days ago, he was talking about some changes he is making. He brought up the rule of 90, how 90 days CAN make a difference. It was at that time, I told him I do it every 3 months. He looked at me funny... and asked, what do you change? I told him it was 90 days that got me back into college, 90 days got me exercising regularly, 90 days helped me with my budget among other things I have acheived over the past few years by setting short-term goals every 90 days.
My hope is that he will start to adopt more goals in his efforts to change. Cool thing is, I am inspired to really show some strong goal acheivments myself as an example to him. Instead of getting angry with him for some of the things that I think he needs to change and just discouraging him, I think my OPPORTUNITY to help my son is by sitting down and writing up some goals for Jan, Feb, & Mar 2012, then to start working on them so that he sees how it is done, 1 day at a time. Perhaps the greatest thing I can do, is to share some tools and maybe he will learn how to turn situations/events/problems etc, into new opportunities for himself.
Running with my OPPORTUNITY!
