Visualization

I have always prided myself on being a visual person. I can see things in my mind.  However, after reading today's article on visualization it was very hard for me to visualize me succeeding. I have no problem visualizing me failing!  I have done it for a lifetime.  I always thought it was a good thing in that I had already thought of the worst, so I would be prepared if things went south.  This is going to take a lot of Brain Training.  Last night I woke up in the middle of the night and started thinking of issues with my kids. I didn't want to be up all night like I had the night before, so I got up and tried to read...just like coach said.  Didn't work. I couldn't make it through a page without my thoughts wandering back to these issues.  I decided to find the opportunities in these problems.  I managed to do that for a short time, but it didn't last very long.  I think today is probably my hardest day of Tools.  I have decided that I need to find some pictures/photos that I can look at to start to develop my visualization.  Perhaps some skinny pictures of me.  Pictures of healthy foods!  It will take a lot of practice to move through this, but I also believe that when I get there, I will be much happier!

You can do it!

There are a few things you should consider:

(1) You may have "programmed" your brain to automatically think negatively and to focus on failure.  Your mind has hardwired this in over many years, so it will take time and patience to change into thinking in a positive manner.  The good thing is that you trained your brain to think a particular way and you can train it again--to think positive thoughts.

(2) Don't be too hard on yourself.  Just start out visualizing for 30 seconds or a minute and then go from there.  It takes practice.

(3)  You're mind will often get locked in thoughts on things that you fear.  You need to realize this when the thoughts occur.  Don't fight these thoughts (which sounds hard because you don't won't to think about them in the first place).  You have to let them be.  Don't argue with these thoughts, let them pass through without judgment.  The more you resist or the more you have an internal argument with your thoughts--the stronger they will become.

(4) If you truly get locked in a thought loop, where you cannot get these out of your mind and you're constantly going over the same issues from day to day, you may want to see a therapist.  Many people have a form of OCD called "Pure-O," which is obsessions without the compulsions.  It is nothing to worry about and can be treated with therapy and/or medication.

I'm sure you can reach your goals as long as you stick with it.  Best wishes!
