 Elephant.

 They're slow but very intelligent. They depend strongly on family and community. They aren't afraid of lions, hyenas and other savannah predators. They're complex but live simply.
My favorite domestic animal is (if you choose dog be specific with breed etc):
 Pound dogs that have bright eyes.
Why:
 They love without question or hesitation. It's so easy to make them happy and all they want in return is to make you happy.

Why:
 It's my favorite meal. Simple earthy flavors washed down with icy booze.
