I agree with what's already been posted, especially the breathing, I find closing my eyes and focusing on the big slow breaths helps me calm and clear my mind.  Some people focus on the sounds of waves they imagine, and others find it best to play a relaxation CD, or calming music they like. preferably instrumental or chanting music.

A good introduction to Meditation I found was a book by Christina Rodenbeck, "A Gaia Busy Person's Guide to Meditation."   It's a small book that covers various techniques for meditation, finding what works best for you, and also tells you how meditation can benefit you.  I find it very useful.

Happy Meditating!

just filling in on paul.

a good way to get you mind relaxed for the meditation is breath in through you nose and just follow your breath down to you stomach and out through your mouth.

try to feel the flow of the air.

just repeat don't get to focused on your breath it has to go naturally.

when you do this longer will start to notice your breaths you will be shorter over time when your mind is calmer.

well i hope you get some good meditation:)

I don't know if 'teach' is the right word.  I can tell you what I've done.  First ya sit, then ya breath.

Not as easy at is sounds.  The thoughts and emotions and to do lists creep in.  I went to here a buddhist monk speak once (sorry, I forgot his name) and he said to think of meditation as an expressway and your thoughts are exits.  You don't have to take the exits, just notice them as they go by.  Eventually you can get to a point where you just notice the beautiful patterns as they scurry by.

But just sit...and breath and if it helps to get rid of the constant chattering of your mind, you can say OM or another chanted word or words that fits with your beliefs.

Just do it for 5 minutes the first time...increase 5 minutes a week - eventually get to an hour ...or two.  I think it was Ghandi who said something like "Tomorrow is a busy day, so I've got to meditate twice as long."

I hope this helps...and I have to confess that I have been not as frequent in my practice as I would like to be.  But I like to encurage it in others.
