I agree with what's already been posted, especially the breathing, I find closing my eyes and focusing on the big slow breaths helps me calm and clear my mind. Some people focus on the sounds of waves they imagine, and others find it best to play a relaxation CD, or calming music they like. preferably instrumental or chanting music.
A good introduction to Meditation I found was a book by Christina Rodenbeck, "A Gaia Busy Person's Guide to Meditation." It's a small book that covers various techniques for meditation, finding what works best for you, and also tells you how meditation can benefit you. I find it very useful.
