Day 22

I woke up at 4am, watched television news and then went to the gym.  I had a great workout. Then, I came home and opened up some bills. There are bills that have been sitting on my desk for at least 2 weeks because I did not want to open them.  In any event, it turned my mood from happy to sad and fearful.  As I have stated in these blogs, I am in severe debt and am running out of cash.

I have a startup business which has potential, but it is struggling.  The first reason is me.  I have so much fear and self-doubt that it is impeding my progress. As a result, the other 2 cofounders are suffering. One cofounder is working his ass off. Meanwhile, the third (who is also my roommate) is taking a lax approach to this and is not working hard.  Even more concerning is that he knows I am in a rut, and throws subtle jabs at me whenever he can.

Thinking about my situation with my roommate, thinking about this debt, it has me very scared and worried.

On the bright side, I am seeing results and truly do want to change my life. Before I started Tools, I was simply coasting. Now, I do want to change.  I am spending a lot of time researching new careers, I am spending at least 7-8 hours a day working on my startup. Even though I am a lawyer, I realize that in this economy I will have to get any job that is available so I can pay my bills. This may mean working at a grocery store, etc.  I really need help.  I think I have about 2 months of cash flow left. I never thought I would be in this situation, but I am...

Things are Rough All Over

I'm not sure how the rest of the world is faring through the economic upheaval, but I know that the American and Canadian situation is certainly grim. I currently work for a company that is directly affected by the economy through the housing and construction fields and even though I am not one of the most valuable guys in the company, I have not yet been laid off like many of my fellow coworkers. Do I enjoy going to work everyday knowing that I could be next? Of course not.

Is your business you are trying to start affected directly by the economy? If it is then don't put all the blame on yourself. Now is just a bad time to look for success in a short-term aspect. Maybe you will have to accept the fact that you will have to take whatever work you can get until this thing blows over. But one thing is for sure, when things are slow, it's certainly a good time to plan your attack on the world when things pick up again.

I too, am trying to start a small business. I have managed to find a way to ride the wave of the Christmas holidays by offering a product geared to children, something unique. I took a chance and just put it out there and, surprise, it was a hit. When Christmas is over, however, I can see the sales tank again to almost nothing. The short term money I snap up will be put aside while I plan my next big project that will get me through the spring and summer. At least I can get my name out there and get a feel for what it will be like when things are good again. Use this slow time as a positive period to get your affairs in order. Then you'll be ready when things get nuts. And definitely worry about getting those bills paid. It is possible to have a job that you know is only temporary and still plan for your future with your personal business. With good planning comes success which means you will finally get what you truly want.

thanks!

the market is not that great here in Chicago.

congratulations on your success!

you are right, good planning leads to success.  but, how does one plan?  I planned my life between 22 and 32. I accomplished every single goal I set for myself and then I was miserable. I reached my destination and it sucked.  How do I plan now?
