Today's 'get a job' section was on following up.
My day job is as a coordinator of a fellowship program. There is a thin line, for me between people who "follow up" and people who...hmm...how to say this subtlely...bug the holy crap out of me.
I get these people who call every couple of days, wanting to speak to the program director. Although the latter IS the one to make the final decision, there is no way he's going to want to talk to you after reviewing the 150 applications that I have painstakingly trimmed down from the 500 applications I received. And when he finds out that you've called 10 times and HAVE to talk to the big boss and can't be bothered with the mere coordinator, he's moving that application to the bottom of the pile.
I also remember a worker here who wanted a job in the chapel. She got an interview and then had her friends, relatives, ministers all call and e-mail her perspective new boss to say how wonderful the employee was.
So, the woman totally creeps out the whole chapel staff and they start to think she's a stalker and the job went to a less qualified person.
So...yes...follow up. But for God's sake show restraint...and make your first point of contact your FRIEND and not someone ready to call 911.
