I had the same problem. I did some things in the past that I would like to change, I had a wrong, negative attitude towards situations, but I've got used to think this way: if that happened, there was a reason. Nothing happens without a reason. Sometimes you don't understand it immediately, sometimes it takes months or even years to understand why something happened to you (even very bad things), but I'm sure that God (or Destiny, the Universe, Life, call it the way you want!) has a plan for everyone. And maybe bad things that happen to you are just signs that you have to change you way of life, that you have to take a chance, to try something different, or maybe you just needed an experience, you had to learn something that will certainly be useful sooner or later in your life, you just have to listen to your heart and find a useful, bright side in everything that happened in the past. Trust me, it works! And it's wonderful! :) Just have faith.

I used to ask my self the same question, but hopefully I've found a way to "overcome the past".
At first I couldn't let go the past because I was still caught in this situation, and everytime I thought about it I had the same feeling(anger,disappointment...) this feeling suck your energie,make you week and get you stuck in this moment so that you can let it go.
So what I did, is when I think about this chapter of the past, I say to myself :
Does it matter if it was my fault or others ? No it doesn't cause it happened anyway.
Was it something that I could've avoided ? yes or no, it doesn't matter, it happened anyway.
Does it help me to be caught in a moment of the past to feel helpless and angry and all the negative feeling ? No it doesn't help.
Does anybody feels what I do about this or just me ? No they don't, everyone is living in the present, so why should I stay stuck in the past.
And then I'll say to my self : what doesn't kill you makes you stronger !! and it did happen to me so I learn and so I get stronger and beat my darkest thought!
I've done this positive thinking over and over, and it help me not to forgive those who have hurt me, but to accepte what they've done.
Once you accept the facts, you can live with the past as a chapter and a source of a strenght.
You can't change the past, but you can change the present and make your futur better.

I wish I knew the answer to this. The experts tell me to accept it - as it is. Then to let it go. That's super tough and I'm not sure really possible. I don't have an answer but I do understand.
